Proof66 Notes

Espolon Blanco tequila is the un-aged expression from the distillery, and is a pure homage to the agave.

Espolon Blanco was named Best Silver Tequila in the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

El Espolon tequilas are made in the small Destiladora San Nicolas, founded recently in 1998. They are made in an all-natural process meant to celebrate the heritage of Mexican tequila-making. They use estate-grown agave for their tequila. All aging is done in Canadian Oak. The brand and distillery were acquired by Gruppo Campari in 2009; the label itself was re-imagined, re-formulated, and re-launched 3 years later in 2013.

I'm not a tequila drinker, but this is what I've started using to make my wife's Palomas and Margaritas. Definite step-up in taste from the Jose Cuervo Silver, which I used until I discovered that unless it's 100% Agave, it's not real tequila. No headache the next morning either like with the Cuervo. Price is good.

Hi BDanner... staff editor here. There are generally two standards of tequila: the 100% agave (the Espolon qualifies here) and the Mixto tequilas that require only 51% or better agave... the remaining can be anything else though is probably grain alcohol (the Cuervo Silver/Gold qualifies here). They're both "real" tequilas in the sense that they qualify under the Mexican authorities that oversee such things Of course, tequila enthusiasts probably have a different opinion and would agree with you that the only "real tasting" tequila must be made with pure agave. PS--really like the avatar image!

Thanks For the information. That's the reason that any time I have an alcohol realated question, I come here first. The two spirits about which I know the least are tequila and rum, simply because I haven't acquired the taste for them.......yet. I was referring to a review that I saw online that claimed tequila's bad hangover reputation was due to what I just learned is mixto tequila. According to his review, 100% agave tequila is supposed to be much easier on you. And the Avatar? Jsut a nod to the show that got me hooked on Old Fashioneds

proof66staff (2015-05-19):
Glad to help! (We, after years of "research" on the subject, have come to the conclusion that hangovers are the result of drinking too much alcohol... the better stuff only mitigates the effect.)

Value-wise, nothing beats Espolon. And this is actually (much) better than more expensive blancos (*cough*Patron*cough*). Drink it straight, mix it, whatever. It's versatile.

Espolon blanco is one of the best budget value blancos out there period. Has intense floral agave nose with citrus. Same intense flavors continues in the palate with peppery finish. Very good for price point, and makes mean margaritas.

(3.5 out of 5). A good value tequila, though the reposado is better. Very pure nose of agave. Comes in savory and slightly spicy, but finishes smoothly. Not the best sipping blanco, but it works. Available for about $22-25 in my area.

I enjoyed it at its price point. Good mixing tequila or shots, not a sipper!

Leans on the salty/savory side...not for sipping, but no harsh finish...may work well in a mixer/margarita

If this is the champion of the 2011 field, the competition was either nonexistent, or highly subpar. I just had this and it lacks a lot of depth other cheaper tequilas have; very one-dimensional for the price. Its mouth feel is pretty watery as well. Its very easy to drink because theres no burn, but Im skeptical how much this one would improve a cocktail, even. I think it would be overpowered. This is low dollar value stuff, and not recommended as a buy if you are the sipping sort.
