Proof66 Notes

Herradura Ultra Anejo was first released in 2015 and is part of a nascent trend in filtering aged tequila to remove color and soften the flavor (a practice in the rum industry for some time). The Ultra Anejo blends the flagship anejo product with a proportion of "extra-anejo" aged up to 4 years in American white oak. The color, however, presents crystal clear. There is also an additive of agave nectar, presumably to sweeten the flavor (a fine idea but it puzzles our untutored minds that a "100% agave" tequila can tolerate an additive... maybe because the agave nectar is also agave?).

In a highly complimentary review by Wine Enthusiast (Kara Newman), they noted "tequila purists likely won't approve" but also said it "is addictive to sip."

Casa Herradura was acquired by Brown-Forman and became Brown-Forman Tequila in 2007. Casa Herradura was one of the oldest and most storied of the tequila brands. The name "Herradura" is translated as "horseshoe" from Spanish and graces their namesake tequila label, though they also quietly produce other labels as well. It was founded in 1861 by Feliciano Romo in Amatitan, Mexico. He named it Herradura for a horseshoe he discovered while walking on the land as a symbol of good luck. Casa Herradura, after Romo visted Cognac, France--became the very first tequila to age its spirit in oak, creating the world's first reposado and anejo tequilas in the 1970s.
