Proof66 Notes

The Cuervo name traces its history all the way back to 1758 with Jose Antonio Cuervo. The name quickly grew for the next 100 years to include somewhere between 2.5 million and 5 million agave plants on over 10,000 hectares by the turn of 20th century. Unfortunately, in the 1930s, the estate was broken up into smaller farmsteads.

Let me be honest, i love Jose Cuervo Especial, for what it is. However, i dont consider this a tequila, as there is almost no agave presence, and tastes like some sour, bitter and buttery plastic liquid. Oddly enough, im one of the few people who never had one of those nightmare stories of people not remembering the day they decide to have some fun with this and waking up next morning feeling like you wish that you were never born. Jose Cuervo makes some excellent tequilas (1800, JC Tradicional, Gran Centenario, Reserva de la Familia etc.) but this is not one of them (or even close in quality for that matter).

2.8/5 Its an okay mixer depending on what you make. It has an overly woody taste in fruity drinks to me, but works well in a Long Island Iced Tea.

Tough crowd on this one based on the previous reviews! I'll admit that my bottle is a few years old, but it's not harsh or hard to drink. Used it for Long Islands in the past. It doesn't taste like any of the tequilas I've had recently and I assume that's what is pissing everyone off here. The nose reminds me of celery powder/salt. The palate is similar but is a little bland. I've had a much worse pour, that's for sure.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this bottle yet. Maybe because I would just be repeating what everyone else with taste buds already said. All I can really say is if you're still drinking this, please stop. There are so many other options available at this price point that taste good and won't leave your mouth tasting like a greasy sponge the next day.

If you're seriously still drinking this...I don't even know what to tell you. The first time I ever drank this, I swore off tequila for years. It is BAD.

Jose Cuervo gave me one of my worst day after experiences...I wasn't really hung over, but the combination of gas and reflux kept that Gawdawful taste in my mouth for hours on end. Almost single-handedly ruined tequila for me.

Sure ill tell u what I think, look at all the reviewers with a 100 or more rating. They all give this 1 star, and guess what if u know anything about tequila or liquor in general u know that this is complete crap. It's amazing what marketing can do, marketing is so effective it can take a product that is 51% blue agave, mixed with artificial colors and god knows what, and make it popular. I would never drink a tequila that isn't 100% blue agave I'm sure everyone with a brain can agree with me on that. This product sucks terribly.

This tequila gets a bad reputation for not being 100% agave. This is a good staple tequila. Every bar has it. I use this to compare all other tequilas/mezcals and this definitely beats Wild Shot mezcal hands down. However I'm still searching for my go to tequila.

This tequila doesn't get a bad reputation for not being 100% agave, it gets a bad reputation because it tastes like toilet cleaner. Glad you're still searching for your go to tequila.

Allan (2014-12-06):
When you get the chance to try some better spirits you will see what everone is talking about. It's not being a snob . It's just that once you have had the real thing an imitaion tastes horrible.

Very little/no effort seems to go into Jose. If you're looking for cheap tequila, it's much better to go with Sauza or something equivalent. I'm sorry, but I don't see any point in purchasing this unless you know nothing about tequila whatsoever.

I have to give props to the Cuervo marketing department. They've managed to pass off an utterly crappy, artificially colored, 49% water swill as being cool. This is what being mentioned in a couple of popular songs will get you; people paying 100% agave money for mixto garbage.

If you have never tried even a middle of the road 100% agave tequilayou might like this . On the other hand if you have tried anything even resembling a good tequila you won't touch this stuff. The flavor is harsh and unpleasant to say the least and it is NOT real tequila . 1/2 tequila 1/2 neutral grain spirit.

I am not really a tequila drinker, and I hated this at first, but I eventually did come to appreciate Especial somewhat. This does make a decent mixer and shooter, and there is an underlying sweetness once you get past the burning. Not a terrible tequila, but there are better ones for a few dollars more.

Like I told the other guy. When you get a few more quality tequilas under your belt you wil lose your appreciation of Cuervo.

Jose Cuervo gets a bum rap. Yes, it's rough to say the least, it burns, it's too sharp, too aggressive. But it IS tequila, it's consistent, it mixes ok, it shoots ok (with training wheels). It's certainly not a sipping tequila, but the value-for-the-buck, particularly for when you're already buzzed, is pretty good.
