Proof66 Notes

Monte Alban is named for a mountaintop settlement in Jalisco, Mexico known for its agave plants, both cultivated and wild.

Sazerac is noted as the importer for Monte Alban but they currently acknowledge it as a mezcal label rather than tequila (as of September, 2011).

Note that the price indicated above is for a one-liter bottle.

This is first mezcal i have ever tried. Has notes of smoky-pineapple, green agave and caramel. Not sure if this is a reposado, as there is no statement on the label of bottle. For the first timers, the smell could be overpowering and may put them off. Despite the bold smell and flavors, this is surprisingly smooth. There is also a worm inside the bottle and a packet of it's own mixture of salt and spices to add to the element of fun while drinking this liquor. Although i can drink this and be happy, i have tried mezcals that are way ahead of this and this hardly tastes like the many other mezcals. Like one of the reviewers noted, this tastes more like tequila than a mezcal.

I like to sip my liquor. This is ok. not my first choice but I wouldn't turn it away if offered. Light but leaves a bit of an after flavor that is better washed down with a side of sprite or seven up.

Ok. It was either this or Cuervo gold you or your friends were drinking the night you swore off tequila. Comes with the "legendary tequila worm" even though it's a mezcal. ( I don't know of a tequila that actually has a worm). A little hint of smoke , but basically a mass produced, cheap, party favor. If you want to grab that salt shaker and lime, go to town with this. Just don't try to enjoy the flavor.

Acceptable, but after tasting the two bottles of Gusanos, this has more in common with tequila than refined Mezcal. No smokiness, hot aroma, but the seasoning salt packet was interesting. Too expensive for Cuervo quality.
