Proof66 Notes

Sauza Hornitos Black Bottle Anejo is aged for 18 months in oak prior to bottling. The first 12 is the conventional method in oak to create anejo tequila, then an additional four in what they call "deep charred" barrels, then a final finishing in toasted barrels for another 2 months. These heavy or "alligator" char barrels imply intense, oak driven flavors with bitter finishes heavily favored by some bourbon drinkers.

Party tequilas (bottom shelf) are harsh and unpleasant. They smell like varnish remover and taste about the same. I thought I did not think I like tequila until I found this bottle on a back shelf (forgotten) and covered with dust in a local store. Proof 66 (great app) had it rated highly and the price was about $5 cheaper than advertised, that is how long this bottle had sat there. I bought it and it is fantastic. My go to tequila. Wish I'd found a whole case collecting dust! Point to take home: Never think you dislike any spirit until you try a highly rated, top shelf variety. In my book, this is top shelf.

Great Anejo tequila. Wounded flavor profile with added awesomeness of oak maturation. Absolutely genius. Great tequila. Top notch.

On the nose, it imparts a beautiful waltz of agave and oak. On the rocks, its a similar dance, but in the form of a two-part play. The agave profile comes out in the first act and is fantastic - nice quality and no bite. The second act then takes over and now enters the oak. It finishes like a whiskey and I love it. This is a whiskey lovers tequila.
