Proof66 Notes

Absolut is famous for flavored vodkas and great marketing. Absolut Chicago is the 2013 limited edition expression from the Absolut Cities campaign to celebrate specific attributes of various cities, in this case the famous city of nightlife Miami. This is the seventh release in the series and in this case takes the flavor of rosemary and olive. The bottle design was "crowd-sourced" with the design company Threadless using a community of over 200,000 participants and represents a stylized skyline of Chicago including ferris wheels, hot dogs, pigeons and other icons. They suggest serving in a Vodka Martini or other classic cocktails, which suggests to us an herbal, gin-like flavor (absent the juniper, of course).

About the Producer:

Absolut claims "all natural ingredients" with "no added sugar." It officially began production in 1979 and, to this day, they take great pride in their production facilities in Ahus, Sweden where "every drop of water" comes from a single "deep well." The vodka uses a soft winter wheat for its base. The brand is owned by French-based Pernod-Ricard.

Absolut vodka is one of the top-selling brands of vodka in the world and is one of the great visionaries in the marketing of vodka. Their aggressive and occasionally scandalous ads in the nineties helped launch the cocktail culture.

I'm a big fan of these editions. The flavors are usually unusual and difficult to replicate at home. This is no exception: the aroma is a briny olive with a breath of rosemary, just like the label promises. Neat, you can taste the olive but breath in rosemary. But on a little ice--and especially when shaken into a garden-variety vodka Martini with sweet vermouth--the olive really comes out. It's a very Chicago pizzaria kind of aroma but the flavor is all briny, dirty Martini. I can't imagine using this in anything but dirty Martinis and perhaps Bloody Marys. But it's another fine piece from Absolut.
