Proof66 Notes

The name "crystal head" is taken from the legend of 13 different crystal skulls scattered throughout the earth by some lost civilization of advanced arts. The brand itself was founded by Canadian-born actor Dan Aykroyd (of Ghostbusters fame among others) and John Alexander in 2008. They claim they are avid researchers and devotees of the crystal skull legend... presumably honoring the mystery with vodka. In an interview with Tasting Panel Magazine (May, 2013), Akroyd states "We are selling enlightened drinking, positive thinking and the spirit of positive energy." While Akroyd owns the brand, the spirit itself is produced by contract at the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation

Crystal Head vodka--obviously presented in exactly that: a crystal head bottle--is produced "1,000 miles east of any polluted air or water" in Newfoundland, Canada. The spirit itself is made from a blend of wheat and corn, which to us implies a slight sweetness to the vodka with a classic, French/Russian style wheat finish. It is filtered through Herkimer Diamonds and bottled with no additives whatsoever. The bottle was developed by Italian glass-maker Bruni Glass.

The bottle is cool, but it isn't worth the extra money for the mid-level vodka inside. I'd probably rate this a 3 if the price were $10-$15 lower. Has a slight rubbing alcohol taste and smell and absolutely nothing else.

I'm not a vodka drinker. In fact, I'm one of those who think that you can't make a Martini unless you use gin. I bought a tiny bottle of this because my wife wanted the skull. After puzzling over what I would use it for, I remembered a drink called the Vesper. It is: 3 oz gin (preferrably Tanqueray or a similar gin), 1 oz vodka, and 1/2 oz Lillet Blanc. I didn't like it when I had tried it before, but I liked it with this vodka. I suspect that it was because it didn't hide the gin, but it was quite nice.

Tried it with excitement and honestly have to say that I have had 12 dollar vodkas that I couldnt tell the difference between. Your paying for one badass bottle I would say buy once, then fill the head with a more decent priced spirit.... no one will tell a difference

Saw this while sitting at a bar. Obviously it was the bottle that grabbed my attention. So I ordered it on the rocks. Very drinkable, but nothing about it screams to me to plunk down the money for the whole package. There are other brands that offer the same quality and taste at a lesser price point for my particular budget.

I blind taste dozens of vodkas and i rate this as number one. However my second favorite can be bought at about one-third the price: Shakers (rye).

Love it, hate it, or in-between it. Not usually in the mood for it, but when I am, it goes on the rocks. Sure itll liven up a Coke, but I try not to let even ice dilute the taste.

My parents bought my a handle of this for my 21st birthday a few months ago for $100. I have wanted to try this for a long time but never could justify a $50 price tag for vodka. Anyway with that said although the bottle is amazing the contents are nothing special. It is not the worst vodka I have ever had. It certainly is not a bankers club or vladimir. It also isnt a grey goose or Absolut either though...... I would say that this is along the lines of an $15 bottle of smirnoff...... No worse. No better. Not worth the price.

I always hated vodka, but had to buy this for the bottle one day.  After trying it I'm happy to say that I can't get enough of it, it's smooth enough to drink on the rocks, with no harshness.  Don't judge a book by its cover, or a vodka by its bottle.  You can tell who does by looking at the reviews, but all the professional taste-testers agree that this is a top-notch vodka.  Enjoy!

The only tasty thing about this vodka is the cool bottle it comes in.  The vodka itself begs for another pass through the still to extract the true heart of the spirit.

Lets face it... You probably bought this because the bottle is wicked cool. And it is. But the vodka isnt half bad either. Not great, but not bad. It has a sweet start, but a bit of a harsh finish for being "triple distilled through diamonds" or whatever Dan Aykroyd says. In the end, this screams gimmick. The bottle is cool, but there are better vodkas on the market for a lot less money. So buy it for the bottle, enjoy the vodka for what its worth, then refill the bottle with something better.
