Proof66 Notes

Firefly Distillery was founded by Jim Irvin (a graduate from Vanderbilt University in chemistry) and Scott Newitt (a graduate of Louisiana State University) in 2008. The roots of the distillery are in Jim Irvin's entrance to the wine business with muscadine grapes in 2000. Meeting Newitt--then a liquor distributor--they entered the spirits industry with a small still and the idea for a sweet tea vodka in 2008. The tea used to infuse the vodkas are grown in South Carolina from a plantation only five miles away. In 2009, Firefly reached a deal with Sazerac to produce their products out of a combination of Barton and Buffalo Trace Distilleries. According to the filing with the federal Tax and Trade Bureau, the production is now done in combination with their South Carolina plant and Sazerac facilities.

Firefly Sweet Tea vodka is made from a base of muscadine wine grapes--a bit unusual in the vodka world but growing in popularity. It is distilled in small batches at the distillery using locally produced grapes (in fact, owned by one of the distillery owners) and infused with tea, also grown locally. This is the most well-known of the Firefly brands and is the base for many of their other infusions.

Firefly Skinny Tea is a recent addition first launched in March, 2011, that offers their vodka in a lower proof and sweetened with Truvia rather than Louisiana cane sugar.
