Vodka - Grape
Hangar One Straight Vodka
This is a Tier 1 score in the Vodka category. It means the spirit has won the highest recommendation at least once and probably many times.
Hangar One vodkas are made with a blend of column still vodka made from midwestern wheat (apparently acquired through contract) and their own craft-distilled voigner grape-based vodka made in their pot still in small batches. The distillery blends the voigner grape spirit in order to bring out greater flavor without adding any sort of "alcoholic taste." They are very proud of their additive-free vodka, where they suggest many other "premium" vodkas contain sugars and other additives to conceal harsh, alcohol tastes.
Despite the blend with wheat-based vodka, we have opted to list Hangar One as a grape-based vodka to better reflect the vision and purpose of the spirit. In 2013, they redesigned their packaging though the formula is the same.
We had the opportunity to taste Hangar One at the 2012 Distill America event in Madison. In a spirit class where it's difficult to distinguish one's self, hangar One's neutral vodka comes out clean, flavorful, and rewards the extra effort to find and purchase.
