Journeyman Distillery Humdinger Jalapeño Organic Spirit
This spirit has yet to face the slings and arrows of the rating agencies.
Journeyman Humdinger Jalapeno Spirit begins life from a whiskey base of 100% organic rye grain. This itself should lend a kind of spicy, robust flavor to the spirit. They macerate (that is, give a good, thorough soaking) locally grown jalapeno peppers from the community (organic) garden. They are quick to note that the process retains the flavor of the jalapeno but none of the spicy heat. We have opted to list this as an infused vodka to better represent it in its peer group, though we're quick to note the unusually high proof of 90 relative to flavored vodkas (often less than 80). They call it "sweet and spicy" and suggest for a Bloody Mary cocktail.
In a tasting event at Distill America, a signature cocktail with St Germain Elderflower liqueur, Chartreuse Green liqueur, lime juice, and Humdinger in equal parts was outstanding and met with great acclaim.
About the Producer:
The Journeyman Distillery is a true "grain to glass" distillery in that they control and execute every aspect of the spirit production. It was founded by Bill Welter in 2011, a former fringe professional golfer who found himself in Scotland learning about whiskey. At the distillery, they are a handcraft / hands-on distillery using traditional methods and attempting to recreate 18th century imagery. Their spirits are batch distilled in a traditional copper pot still (named Willy Wonka). Their product is certified organic by the Midwest Organic Services Association.
