Proof66 Notes

Monopolowa vodka is distilled from "a special variety" of (unnamed) potatoes in accordance with traditional Polish recipes. They suggest serving chilled with a twist of lemon or ice cold from the freezer. The brand originated in Poland but has migrated to Austria, where it is produced toda by JA Baczewski.

I'm tasting this for the first time, from the freezer. Picked up a bottle at TJ's because it was less expensive than Stoli, my everyday vodka. I found this site when I googled the name, and created an account after reading the reviews and finding out it was a 98th-percentile vodka. Frankly, I don't understand the high ratings. Poured neat, it's a bit harsh and potatoey with a metallic finish. Agreed it's far better than a well vodka like Smirnoff, but I think Stoli is better. But then, I don't usually drink anything neat except whisky.

Hi Bughunter... staff editor here. Welcome to the site! I saw your remark about the ratings and thought I'd drop you a line. The ratings are fluid and go up and down with various scores... the Monopolowa is buoyed by the 94pt rating from BTI last year. Potato vodkas are often appealing to a vocal and very exuberant minority of vodka drinkers. Some folks love it... many don't! It's kind of like smoky whiskey that way. Really encourage you to keep exploring!

SubGothius (2015-12-26):
I think "from the freezer" may have been a misstep; while chilling may help smoothen grain-based vodkas, it really does Monopolowa no favors, muting everything that makes it special. I see it's been a while since your review, but if you haven't finished the bottle by now or may consider another, try it neat at room temperature, or with just a cube or two.

I'd only ever had Smirnoff and Absolut, and both just tasted like rubbing alcohol, and kind of harsh. However, I saw this and realizing it was on the top rated vodkas list, I decided to but it at a value price. Not disappointed at all. I tried it at room temperature and on the nose I got alcohol, but the taste was smooth and creamy, I didn't know vodka could be like this. My only thought was wow, and that's still all I can think, wow. This is a vodka I could actually sip. Very recommended.

After spotting this here as an apparent good value for reviews vs. price, I tried finding it anywhere to no avail... until I stumbled across it stocked at Trader Joe's, of all places. At any rate, I'm primarily a scotch or tequila man and generally not fond of most vodkas as seeming too reminiscent of rubbing alcohol even in mixed drinks, but this was something else entirely. I actually enjoy sipping this neat, even at room temperature, and look fondly forward to it as I think of preparing a glass. Very smooth and round-bodied, with a pleasantly subtle, appealing flavor that's somehow warm and cozy, and nary a hint of that rubbing alcohol antiseptic quality that turns me off most vodkas. I daresay this is a vodka for those who don't like vodka, as well as for those who do.

My house vodka, this has great smoothness and roundness on the palate due to the potato. Beats other potato vodkas hollow as well, and is the single best value I've ever found in vodka.

Best kept secret in vodka. Will stand up to Chopin. Great value.
