Proof66 Notes

Smirnoff began with Piotr A. Smirnov in Moscow who was commissioned to produce vodka by the government after he was the first to filter the spirit in charcoal, removing impurities and making a consistent quality. It literally revolutionized the distilling world. After some success, the Smirnov family was forced to flee Russia in the revolution in 1917 when all private businesses were confiscated.

As a kid this gave me some painful hangovers. But Smirnoff today isn't what it was 40 years ago. Enough orange juice makes it palatable though.

The standard for "just average" vodka. Better than Barton, McCormick, or Mr. Boston, but not near as good as Stoli. Decent for a mixer but too much burn to pleasantly drink straight even when very cold. It's a brand I'd call it no-frills without going "cheap" but there are better but less popular brands at the price (Iceberg for one) that are better.

Full disclosure - I'm not really a vodka drinker. I only really use it for mixing highballs or very strongly flavored cocktails like bloody marys, moscow mules, white russians, and cosmopolitans. If you're looking for something to mix, this is a great choice. There's honestly no need to spend more than $20 on a vodka whose flavor subtleties are just going to get covered up by other ingredients. That being said, this is definitely not a great choice for you if you're looking to drink something like a martini that's predominately or exclusively made of vodka. That's your cue to upgrade to Belvedere or Grey Goose. Smirnoff is a workhorse pure and simple.

Adequate in every sense of the word. Neither harsh nor smooth. Nice and flavorless. What one looks for and expects from a vodka. Can be improved with additional filtration if one thinks it worth the trouble. At the price, it is about the best of the competitors, on par with Kirkland American. If you are mixing vodka drinks, this is what you want. Have had it in countries around the globe- it is the same everywhere. If in doubt, go Smirnoff.

Not the worst vodka but far from the best. Many other vodkas better than this one at a better price. A bit harsh and only good for mixing to hide taste in my opinion.

Standard. This is what most people expect when they ask for vodka and I can't blame them. It's not particularly good or bad.

About 2 and 1/2 stars. Nose is mildly ethanol. Mouth is smooth enough but peppery tongue and down the gullet is also peppery. Room temp straight. Platinum 7X is a good deal "smoother" and also generally cheaper. The label clearly states that it is "produced" in the US, so all that BS about being produced in Russia is just that. Some may actually be produced in Russia, but you aren't going to get any of that here. The bottle gives no indication of the production facility, so it could be any US distiller and blended down with water from the East River, for all we know. This is definitely a price shopper item, as most vodka should be. Like most vodkas, if you find a mouse in the bottle, it should be safe to eat. Chill it, drop lime or lemon in it, etc. and it does the job. You can get nearly the same from Vladimir 80 from Montebello Brands but Vladimir is a tad smoother with a bit softer ethanol nose - at 1/2 the price. And, the Vladimir has no obvious stuff floating in it, so it is likely filtered also. A local Baltimore producer. So, Vlad would likely get 4 stars (1 for price) is he was on the list. You can't blend down Everclear 190 that cheaply. Interestingly, the Smirnoff offers a PET bottle, but for the same price as the glass. Obviously, they have no interest in passing on the cost saving to the consumer.

Proof66 Staff (2015-08-16):
Hi Yankel... Proof66 Staff here. We checked the federal Tax and Trade Bureau filing on Smirnoff and they currently show the origin as "Connecticut" at the Diageo bottling company there in Norwalk. Certainly backs up your mention that this is now a US vodka rather than an import, which is an interesting development! In deference to that, we've adjusted our database to show the new bottling location. Thanks for the tip!

Yankel W. (2015-08-16):
Well, that exempts the East River as water source!

Good vodka for some cocktails or mixed drinks when you don't want to spend your Absolute on a sprite/vodka drink or a cheap cosmopolitan for all your friends, it isn't expensive strong body, and it goes well stir or mixed up, but for me it should be illegal to drink it in shots

I'm not a vodka drinker because it reminds me of rubbing alcohol. This is the only vodka I can drink in a martini or shot because it actually has some what of a taste. Not the best to use in a lightly flavored drink such as a vesper lind or where the vodka is mainly just an octaine booster where the flavor will bleed through.

Its not the best. Its basicaly the same as nikolai just more expensive and slightly almost not even enough to be noticeable but just a hair smoother

Does what I think of as the definition of vodka... Mixes in well enough that you can't taste in what ever you mix it in, but still gets you hammered in the end. Smooth by itself too.

It's nothing special, but it's not terrible. It is available everywhere and is easily affordable. If you're not a vodka snob, this is a decent product to stock in your home bar.

It's just your average vodka that everyone has prolly had. I'm not a vodka person, but this is as low as I recommend anyone go with their value vodka buys... any lower then this & you'll get sick. As other's mentioned this work's best mixed... honestly if you haven't tried gin & you are looking for a cheap liquor alternative you may want to explore some of the gin's... I'd take a fleischman's gin & tonic over this any day...

Here at Proof66, we use this vodka quite often as a comparable spirit when trying new vodkas. Over and over again, this humble vodka at a value price-point, surprises us with how delicate and versatile it is. It's not a great vodka but for just about every circumstance it's a highly competent one. Knowing nothing else, and for the money, we reach down for this vodka.

First off, It comes in plastic bottle, so it has the appearance of being cheap.  Then you take a sip,  and you realize that it actually is cheap.  It's good for mixing.

yea smirnoff is a classic and is something that people often consider a good bang for the buck when someone goes to or hosts a party but this is something i'd consider a low quality vodka that MUST be mixed. (very strong bite if drunk straight) As a mixed vodka i would say its quite fair (passing grade) but for a bottle of vodka around the same price i'd rather recommend Sobieski which is a vodka that is superior than this one in every way. (even the price should be almost the same if not cheaper)

Definitely a mixing vodka. Too much burn to drink straight. Slight aftertaste. The cost is the selling point.

This stuff isn't bad. It's not my first choice for vodka, but it's drinkable.
