Proof66 Notes

Solichnaya "Red Label" vodka is the flagship, 80 proof version that can be found in both home and professional bars world-wide.

Stolichnaya vodka was originally made in a distillery in a small village in Irkutsk from the waters of Lake Baikal. The purity of the waters in this lake are a scientific wonder and make exceptional vodka.

Classic, but average vodka nowadays. Stolichnaya has ethanolic taste from start to finish. There is plenty of better vodkas out there.

This was the first vodka I tried where keeping it in the freezer made it better. So it has a special place in my memories. But over time it's gone from my favorite to one I only buy very occasionally. Maybe my tastes have matured but I lean towards Russian Standard in the same price range.

Goes for just under $20 in my area. Great looking bottle. The label instantly makes me picture military parades through Red Square. Nice nose. Pure alcohol with a hint of sweetness. Not as good straight as some of the corn or potato based Vodkas I've tried, but still good (especially if kept in the freezer). Velvety mouth feel. Hints of grain with some pleasant burn. Tried the Dirty Martini Recipe on the Stoli Website (basically 3 1/2oz vodka to 1/2oz olive brine) and it made a great drink. Very fall or wintry. Excellent in a dry martini as well (3 1/2oz vodka to 1/2oz vermouth). Can't wait to experiment in some other vodka based cocktails. Looking forward to trying some of their flavored variations as well. Solid 4 Stars.

Not a bad vodka, but I have noticed a tad bit of variation between bottles. Some have had a very slight copper taste to them, which has actually interesting rather than unpleasant. Fairly clean besides that, but not as much as some of the other vodkas. The flavor is not bad- it kind of has a bit of a slightly sour bite to it. Overall, nothing special here. The taste is not strong and interesting enough to enjoy on its own, but I would prefer something more clean for mixing. The price is about right around here- $20 for a handle. I once got a Mule pack with a handle of Stoli, a pack of (decent but not special) Stoli ginger beer, and two Mule mugs for $22, which was a great deal. That said, there are vodkas I prefer for both the same and lower prices when the pack in unavailable.

Best vodka for shots. Have a chilled shot of Stoli and you won't even know you're drinking vodka.

When the bottle declares boldly "CHILL BEFORE DRINKING" you know something is up. Since Stoli has more "refined" offerings, for more shekels, it is obvious that this is for the masses. The nose and the palate experience are notable. No sugar here for sure. I actually feel somewhat sorry for Russians who must drink this stuff. The Proof66 rating is more realistic in this case, I think. But, taste is subjective. I'll stop before I take away a star for irritation. EDIT: Concerning Lake Baikal: does the water used in Stoli come from the effluent containing dioxen from the Paper Mill on its shores? Or, do they wait until the frequent algae blooms from the effluent (untreated human waste) appear and then obtain the water? And, since the distillery (final) is in Latvia, how is the water transported to Latvia? The Swedes banned bleached paper and paper mills using bleach decades ago. In the face of the boycott, SPI waffled and said that Stoli is a Latvian product. The Latvian website declares that Stoli is distilled at the new Talvis distillery in Russia. So, when it is convenient, the oligarch at SPI says "Russian" and when it pinches he says "Latvian". Neither site mentions water from Lake Baikal. Gotta get that from the markeing BS which dishes up the current lie de jour. Dropping a star for BS and the Oligarch's obfuscation.

Yankel W. (2015-08-30):
In 5/2014 a French National Lab tested a Stoli 80 bottle (from Lithuania) and found that "The laboratory has found a mixture of plants, presumably a mixture of wheat and barley cereal type, associated with corn type cereals". "Grain" is likely closer to the actual mash source..

If it's good enough for Putin and the rst of the Kremlin, it's good enough for me!!! Seriously, though, this is a fantastic vodka for just about anything. Keep this along with Tito's which I also think is fantastic

"Another Stoli, barkeep!" It's no wonder this vodka has gathered its fame. If you've ever been to Lake Baikal; you'd understand why this vodka has been forever a top ten. If you haven't tried it - you must. Smooth; even more so when chilled, of course. Great mixer, but best when frozen and poured into a chilled glass. Do not add ice. Ever. With any Vodka. 5.5 Stars.

This will be my go to unflavored vodka from this point forward. Stoli just became available in my local liquor store not that long ago, though I actually didn't buy this, I got it on accident. I found a bottle of this under the seat of my suburban I just got and decided to use it instead of throwing it out... glad I did. It mixes extremely well and would do nicely for doing shots, if your into that stuff. Its very smooth and the price is awesome. Not much more to say but if your into vodka, give it a try.

This is a definite classic. Everything is as it seems in this bottle. I drink this neat and as a shot. The vodka in which all vodka's should be judged.

This is about as close to great vodka as you can get for the price. Great for mixing, but as with most vodkas drinking it straight is not for everyone.

I must be crazy because this vodka strikes me as incredibly mild yet sophisticated.  Perfect in a straight dry vodka martini or for sipping.  A benchmark for sure at the medium price, and high quality.  My sister deserves praise for this recommendation.

Gentlemen (and ladies),  this is Stolichnaya.  It's not smooth,  it's not clean.  It's made in Latvia and it will try to choke you as you drink it.  Sit back, take a shot,  and watch the hair on your chest grow at an excellerated rate.

Starts with the typical grain alcohol smell.  Finishes dry on the tongue.  I'm going to have to try a dry vodka martini with this.

This is a drinkable vodka to mix into cocktails, but not something you would pour over the rocks and sip.
