Proof66 Notes

Tito's Handmade vodka is made by the "first and oldest legal distillery in Texas." The vodka recipe is the result of a self-proclaimed "guinea pig" taste-testing among Master Distiller and Owner Bert "Tito" Beveridge's friends, who eventually declared it the winner in blind taste-testings over commercial products. In 1997 it launched (after the usual and customary battles with regulators) It is produced in a traditional pot still and filtered through charcoal to remove impurities.

**Edit 10-27-16** Sadly I obtained a new bottle of Tito's and the taste and mouth-feel that had made it so special are all but completely missing now. At best it has become mediocre. More information on my findings in the "community forum" / (Vodka). Original Review......."About five years ago a neighbor had a bottle of this Tito's on a shelf as a gift from a relative in Texas. Well long story short it had never been opened and we proceeded to try it in several mixed drinks. I never knew till then that unflavored Vodka could deliver taste along with alcohol. Here now I tasted a very slight botanical quality with a hint of something like sweetness but different. Since then I have always kept a bottle on hand. Visitors frequently make remarks on it being so much better than any Vodka they have had before."

Irishman (2016-10-17):
Hey Cranecreek! Your review is absolutely spot on for the original Tito's, but they got much, much bigger and even if they didn't change the recipe, I think the quality has taken quite a hit. It happens, I suppose. What I'm curious about is if you still have the 5 yr old Tito's and can compare it to a brand new bottle of Tito's? That would be a very interesting comparison!

Cranecreek (2016-10-17):
I have had a few bottles over the years and have not noticed any difference. The last 1 is about 2 years old and about gone. I use it mostly when we have company, so I will get a new bottle soon and see if it's as you say. If so that will be a let down!

Irishman (2016-10-22):
A 2 year old bottle probably isn't the original. I think it would have to be pre-2014 to be sure.

Cranecreek (2016-10-22):
Well I think I know that ! Let me start again. Our neighbors we visited one night had a gifted bottle that was in their pantry. They had relatives in texas-now this was 1500 miles away from where I live now and when I think about it that was probably 7 years ago, rather than the five I stated and they may have had it unopened for a few years. Well it changed my mind about Vodka. I really liked it. Since then I have had 2 to 3 bottles and I believe it is still very good. Now it is time for a new bottle and NO I do not have my neighbors bottle from 5 years ago. Soon I will be getting a new bottle and will have company from a friend that I introduced Tito's to. So I will find out then. Are you sure you are not being swayed by the fact that Tito's has misled folks with the "handmade" label ? I do not like that either, but it is so common nowdays with several distillers. I think I will try this subject out on our new forum.

I find Titos disappointing. I want to like it, but I can't get past the lingering corn alcohol taste. In addition, it's basically re-distilled pharmaceutical-grade spirit. It's not bad, but it's not very good either. I also think the labeling is somewhat deceptive. I don't think it's a good value for what it is.

If i was to have only one vodka in my house, this would be it. It is arguably the most neutral spirit i have ever tasted and is exceedingly smooth. The smoothness of this vodka rivals the most premium vodkas. One complaint is since it is over the top smooth and neutral in aroma/flavor, it won't be very interesting to those looking for vodka with some character (ciroc, belvedere, russian standard etc.). But hey, the price is fair and its dangerously drinkable, and also its made from corn, which is plus for people like me who doesn't react very well to gluten. 5 stars simply for the drinkability.

Not a big vodka fan but if they all tasted more like Tito's, I would be. While I expect vodka to burn some, I don't like the grain alcohol nose or taste. If you fall into that category, give Tito's a try. You will be pleasantly surprised. I'm still experimenting, (or would be) but after trying Tito's, my wife won't let me bring a different vodka into the house.

Too much hype. Good but basically standard vodka. Made friends blind taste it with smirnoff and more than half though smirnoff was better if that means anything....

Good vodka but price aside, I would not buy this over the basic Russian Standard Vodka.

This is a really good vodka for the price, and I would have probably given it 4 stars, but I'm just not much of a vodka drinker at this point in time. I agree with BDanner about this one having more body and character than the rest. There's not much to comment on with the flavor apart from some mild sweetness and a hint of alcohol burn. The Stoli Elit is still my favorite vodka, but than again the price is 3x more for a bottle too. For a vodka that's $20 or less I'm not sure there's many that are superior to this one.

Love, love, love this spirit! I'm not a vodka drinker generally but have consistently enjoyed Grey Goose and Ketel One when out of other options. I rather strongly prefer this vodka to those options now. The charm of vodka's astringency is lost on me, so this spirit blew me away as it actually suggested some inherent sweetness. I had the great fortune to have this vodka as my sipper, on the rocks with a lime wedge while poolside on vacation in San Antonio this summer. A perfect summer drink, in my opinion.

This is some good stuff. I know the PC crowd wants to sue them, but what the heck??? I never thought vodka would have a little "body" to it, but this actually has some subtle flavor. Used to be a devout Ketel One drinker, but now this is my go-to for anything from vodka tonics to martinis. Just love it

Easily equal to or better than Absolut and Grey Goose, at a much better price (a short drive into South Carolina and I can find this @ $27 for a 1.75L). My main complaint with vodkas is their lack of "character" or "body". There's nothing to separate one from the rest of the pack. This vodka is smooth, but it has that body that is missing in so many of the others. If someone gives you a bottle of the expensive stuff, by all means, enjoy it. But if it's coming out of your own pocket, this is what you should buy for your home bar.

Irishman (2015-01-29):
It used to be much better than it is now. It had a heavy, silky, viscous feel to it with a little body and a crystal clear finish. Unfortunately, it's not like that anymore after they added new stills and ramped up production.

BDanner (2015-01-29):
The silky mouthfeel is what I enjoy about this one...I particularly enjoy 3 1/2oz of this stuff with 1/2 oz of olive brine for an excellent dirty martini. Hate I never got to try the older stuff.

Irishman (2015-01-29):
Indeed - if you gave the current version 5 stars, you would have given the original version 10 stars - havinig the original version fiirst ruined the new version for me

Cranecreek (2016-10-17):
I see Irishman is very down on this vodka-now I have not had any recently but will get a new bottle soon-do you also think this Tito's is not worth buying again?

BDanner (2016-10-18):
I've only been buying Tito's for about 5 years, but the quality and taste have been consistent in my experience. I don't know how far back you had to go to get the product Irishman is referring to, but I feel that not only is Tito's a great buy (I can drive to SC and get a 1.75 for about $27) but is just a great vodka period. I can also recommend Platinum 7X Vodka (from Buffalo Trace, no less) if you're looking for a great bottom shelf vodka for infusions, etc. It drinks like a much more expensive spirit.

Clean and smooth, little burn, and totally mixable or sippable. The one possible complaint I could predict that it's not got a ton of vodka flavor, but many consider that a plus. Gluten free and made of corn, and I've purchased this great product as low as $17.50 in stores, a good staple and beaten only by Russian Standard.

Great Vodka, probably one of the best I've had. Pretty neutral smell to it. Very little burn. Great when mixed. Great vodka for shots. Good all around vodka. I would recommend this vodka to anyone. Would definitely buy this over any top shelf vodka.

So, back on 1/18/2013, I submitted the review down below - which I kept here for historical reference. On 1/25/2014 I had a chance to try the newly revised Tito's now that they are a much bigger operation (reportedly growing from a 16 gallon pot still to a 26k acre operation). Well, Tito's is now one of the worst vodkas on the market. They have destroyed the very essence that was Tito's. It was pure, velvety goodness and now it's just plain shit. Don't buy it until you hear they have fixed the recipe. 1/18/2013 - This is absolutely one of my favorite, all-time vodkas. Clean, pure, and velvet is the best way I can describe it. I can never seem to keep it stocked in the bar - it goes fast!

Well, this is AMERICA and business is a-boomin'!

Cranecreek (2016-10-27):
Somewhat "sheepishly" I have to agree, after trying my new bottle (10-27-16) and comparing it to my older sample Tito's has indeed lost it's character. Editing my review to reflect that..

Phizbin (2016-10-30):
I've been following this conversation... I had come to the same, lamentable conclusion. I miss that old Tito's.

As I've mentioned before, I'm not a vodka drinker, and don't know quite how to review it. However, I've tried to be more open minded towards the spirit than I have been in the past, and this is one of the best I've tried. It's well priced (which is to say, it's the price that all vodka should be) as well as very clean, smooth, and respectable. I can find this on sale for as low as $16. This may replace Sobieski as my staple vodka..

strong, full bodied flavor for a vodka.  rich in ways, makes a heavy dirt-nasty White Russian.  Just a good all-around mid-priced vodka, easily on par with Stoli and the like for a few bucks less in most places.

I used to be a huge fan of vodka but have moved away from it in recent years. The problem with Vodkas and decent whiskies is once you start drinking higher quality you cant go back. I can enjoy a nice $18 bottle of rum, but for vodka I have moved passed swill, smirnoff, three olives. I still enjoy Absolut and grey goose, but Im afraid after having my first taste of Titos about 15 minutes ago I they might not cut it anymore. Titos is by far the smoothest and neutral straight vodka shot I have ever had.

One of the better new American vodkas - cleaner than Avian Fashion Vodka and about 1/2 the money. Damn cheap for what you are getting. Very clean, smooth and easy to drink. Another plus is being made from corn, it is gluten-free for people with wheat allergies.
