Liquor Review Notes:
The Aberlour Distillery was founded by James Fleming in 1879 in the heart of Speyside. They glory in being between the junction of the rivers Lour and Spey, the former river providing the water for the whisky. The community itself claims to be 1,400 years old. According to Malt Maniacs the name aberlour translates from the Gaelic as "the mouth of the babbling brook."  The distillery is owned by Chivas Brothers who themselves are owned by the French-based Pernod-Ricard

Aberlour 12yr Double Cask single malt is aged--obviously enough--for 12 years in a combination of oak casks either used for bourbon or sherry (hence, "double cask") giving the whisky unusual characteristics in taste and hue.

Smooth and mild. Refined. VERY nice scotch. Similar to Balvenies double wood but $20 less. Hard to drink just one. Def buy more.

Nose gives sweet caramel but is otherwise quite subdued with light wood smoke and some light spiciness. The arrival is sherry sweet and spicy developing intense hot black pepper which lasts for some time. This eventually dies down to reveal further sherry sweet spices. However, if this malt isn’t held long enough in the mouth for the heat to numb the palate, the body is quite different. It then gives a marked bitterness and light vanilla alongside the milder pepper development. The finish is quite short in either case giving some light peat, sweet spices and light sulphur at the close. The sulphur doesn’t mar the aftertaste which is pleasantly sweet and mildly spiced. This is a good malt though let down slightly by the bitterness in the body under normal drinking conditions.
