Liquor Review Notes:
The Aberlour Distillery was founded by James Fleming in 1879 in the heart of Speyside. They glory in being between the junction of the rivers Lour and Spey, the former river providing the water for the whisky. The community itself claims to be 1,400 years old. According to Malt Maniacs the name aberlour translates from the Gaelic as "the mouth of the babbling brook."  The distillery is owned by Chivas Brothers who themselves are owned by the French-based Pernod-Ricard

Aberlour 16yr Single Malt scotch is the 16yr expression of the double-cask scotch whisky aged in a combination of bourbon oak and sherry oak casks.

The nose is certainly more forward than the 12 year giving sweet spicy oak and some vanilla. The arrival is quite sweet with light spices and early heat. This develops into hot chilli pepper with some sweet vanilla becoming increasingly evident as the heat dies down. The finish is spicy with a light sulphur sourness but overall quite muted as the palate is still numb from all the earlier heat. The aftertaste also gives some sourness but this dies away leaving bittersweet malted spices. Drunk without holding the arrival is again sweet and spicy. The body is pleasantly warming without too much heat developing on the palate. Better still this doesn't show bitterness in the body under normal drinking conditions - quite an improvement on the 12 year. The aftertaste is slightly bitter but balanced with some light peat coming through as a final note.

Great nose and a slightly briny finish. Not too peaty. A delicious single malt.
