Proof66 Notes

Alaska Distillery (formerly Glacier Creek Distillery) was founded by native Alaskans Scotti MacDonald, Shawn Ansley, and Winston Chelf in 2005. Toby Foster first had the idea as the natural next step from his own home-brewing hobby. Glacier Creek takes pride in that their distillery tries to operate responsibly by limiting the carbon footprint and recycling. The name of the distillery comes from the astounding natural beauty in the glaciers of Alaska and the purity of its water they use for their spirits.

Alaska Outlaw Whiskey is what they regard as Alaska's first (assuredly first legal) whiskey. The outlaw on the bottle is the "notorious Soapy Smith" first released in the fall of 2011. Soapy Smith, we learned from his very own website at, was "king of the frontier con men" and card shark. He was a crime boss in Colorado before moving to Alaska in 1896 where became the "uncrowned king of Skagway." He was slain in a violent gunfight against vigilantes. As for the whiskey, at this time we're not sure of the grain or the aging of the whiskey and have opted to list it as a "blended whiskey."

I was so disappointed with this product.  Having been born in Alaska but now living in Oregon I'm always eager to try my homestate concoctions.  Unfortunately this one is not up to any kind of standard.  It is the most bland whiskey I've ever tasted.  No hint of anything.  I didn't realize a whiskey could be this tasteless.

I make no claims to be a professional whiskey taster (I wish), but from more than 35 sometimes fuzzy years of bourbon experience, this is more of a a bourbon whiskey.  It's much more tasty than the bland blended variety, verrrry smooth and drinkable, but not too sweet, although it is not as smoky as I would prefer for my favorite bourbon.  By the way, I'm still looking for my favorite bourbon. I was told I was one of the first to buy a bottle from the local Safeway in Wasilla, AK, the hometown of the distillery.  I'll be back for more.
