Proof66 Notes

Alberta Dark Batch Rye whisky was launched in 2015 and is a blend of different whiskies. They use 91% of their 100% rye whisky in heavily charred oak barrels blended with 8% bourbon and 1% sherry (Canadian whisky allows for small components of flavoring). These combine to give the spirit a very dark color.

We like dark drinks so dark whiskey fit right in. Fittingly, the whiskey looks very dark. I smelled the whiskey in three different glasses because I got something new every time. The smell ranged from a sweet caramel to a strong alcohol to a warm kind of cedar smell. My first impression of the taste was a ‘nice burn’. After some sips it turns into an interesting raspberry taste. The taste lingers a while with a mix of fruit and bitterness. It is not my favorite, but combined with the price, it isn’t to bad. This is really unique: great rye flavor, the sweetness of bourbon and a touch of sherry sweetness, though the sherry influences the nose and the color of this rye more than it does the flavor. This works great, make that exceptionally well, in a Manhattan, and the rye is really flavorful, yet tempered by the age (between six and 12 years - two rye blends - is a long time for the typical rye). For $30 its a fantastic value. I think if the 8% bourbon was something a bit higher in quality than Old Grand Dad Id have given it a fourth star. By the way, Alberta sources the rye for Whistle Pig and a few other high end ryes.
