Proof66 Notes

Ardbeg Corryvreckan is a scotch that is meant to replace the popular and well-respected Airigh Nam Beist (itself a limited edition scotch). It is named after Europe's largest whirlpool (corryvreckan translating from the Gaelic as cauldron of the seas") lying between the islands of Jura and Islay. In the words of the distiller: "Like the whirlpool, Ardbeg Corryvreckan is heady, intense and powerful. Its 'finish' is long and deep, leaving the connoisseur with a lingering thought of a mysterious and daring journey."

Ardbeg Corryvreckan was named Best Single Malt Scotch in the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan was named Best Single Malt Scotch in the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Ardbeg Distillery claims heritage back to the 18th century where it arose as the self-proclaimed "greatest distillery on earth" out of the fog of "raiding Norsemen" and "illicit" taxes. Its present version is credited to the MacDougall family who officially established the distillery in 1815. The family sold it off in 1959. Today, there is an Ardbeg Committee that meets and oversees the craftsmanship of the scotch to ensure future generations of its quality. Ardbeg styles itself as the "ultimate single Islay scotch." They also claim to be the "most peaty malt whisky in the world." This is a good or bad thing depending upon your tastes. The distillery was acquired by Moet Hennessy via Glenmorangie in 1997.

Perfection if you're partial to drinking out of a cigar's ash tray. And I am. If you let this one sit out for a while before you drink it, vanilla notes will magically appear on the front end.

this is a very good ardbeg expression , i like it very much. nose: peat, spicy, salty, slightly sweet, wine, oak taste: peat, rich, dry, oily, not as alcoholic as one would think with 57.1% finish: long, dry, wood and peat.

So far everything I've tried from Ardbeg has been just awesome. This one is no different. It's like taking the ideal Islay malt and turning all the flavors up to the absolute maximum. Not cheap, but well worth it.

This is basically the holy grail for peat lovers. If you love smokey scotches & you drink them neat (aka you're fine with higher proof)this is a treasure you should explore. For my friends (& myself :)) I build up to this by starting with dewars 18, jumping to JW double black, really getting into some smoky peaty flavor with laph 10 &/or ard uig, sampling wine finished methods with laph quarter but culminating at this gem of a scotch. There is a reason this thing wins so many awards, it is just that good. Please note, if you give this to your friends that don't drink scotch they will likely not enjoy it (cask strength & rich smokey flavor can be offputting for begingers) but for a peat lover there is no better gift imo
