Proof66 Notes

Ardbeg Distillery claims heritage back to the 18th century where it arose as the self-proclaimed "greatest distillery on earth" out of the fog of "raiding Norsemen" and "illicit" taxes. Its present version is credited to the MacDougall family who officially established the distillery in 1815. The family sold it off in 1959. Today, there is an Ardbeg Committee that meets and oversees the craftsmanship of the scotch to ensure future generations of its quality. Ardbeg styles itself as the "ultimate single islay scotch." They also claim to be the "most peaty malt whisky in the world." This is a good or bad thing depending upon your tastes. The distillery was acquired by Moet Hennessy via Glenmorangie in 1997.

Ardbeg Galileo is a limited edition scotch and an adventure in both new techniques in aging and marketing. It is bottled a striking 98 proof and the suggest looking for flavors of peat (naturally), spiced toffee, and creamy cappuccino among others. It is meant to honor the space industry and a distillery experiment in testing compounds kept for 2 years at the international space station for aging whisky (note: this was not done with the Galileo edition but rather a to-be-released edition at a later time... in the words of the distillery, it is a celebration of the experiment rather than the experiment itself). It is aged in ex-bourbon barrels and Spanish marsala wine casks.

The run is limited to a "few thousand cases."

While not a competition we officially follow because it's constrained to whisky, the Ardbeg Galileo won the prestigious Best Single Malt Whisky at the venerable and respected Whisky Magazine's 2013 World Whiskies Award
