Proof66 Notes

Ardmore scotch is "double matured," which they describe as a traditional maturing in oak and then a further aging in "quarter casks" which, because of their size, allow greater contact (and hence, greater flavor) between the oak and whisky. The spirit is between 6 and 13 years old before getting into the quarter casks, making it a younger-styled scotch.

The Ardmore Distillery was actually built by the blending company Teacher and Sons in 1898 and has been crafting scotch since that time. It was later re-purchased (by themselves) in 1974 and operated independently until acquired by Fortune Brands (now Beam Suntory). Ardmore prides itself in its "traditional cask" single malt yielding the marketing phrase, "100 years of tradition in every bottle." They still dry their malted barley using traditional peat fires.

I do not try much scotch because of the price. Bourbon is my forte'. no reason for me to comment on J.W. Red or Dewar's or Bowmore because my comments would not be well taken. I quite liked this Ardmore, a little briny like hickory smoked bacon and the peat smoke is tempered with a citrus quality-delicate floral notes, but the smoke can overtake the other flavors. its like a fire in a fruit tree orchard. Smoked fruit ! Kind of reminds me of a fine white wine in a way, maybe a German dessert wine, but with the peat smoke included.

Ardmore Traditional Cask is perfect for anyone new to smoky, peaty scotches. The thickly sweet undertones definitely make this one more accessible to beginners, and it costs a lot less than its expensive competitors. Peat and smoke are still the major players on the nose and palate, but the underlying caramel and toffee play excellent supporting roles. However, that caramel sweetness dissipates relatively quickly on the finish, so be prepared for the same long, dry, smoky aftertaste that is typical of all the heavy hitters. This whisky is quite simple, but for the price, it's hard to fault it for that. I highly recommend this to scotch drinkers of all experience levels, and I can't wait to shamelessly use this to experiment with some smoky cocktails.

It's like Talisker on the cheap! I paid $27 for a bottle so I'm pumped about how good this stuff is given how much I paid. I get peat, brine, and leather on the nose. The palate has brine, peppery spice, peat, and honey; just like what I'd imagine an 8 year Talisker would be like (it does taste a little more youthful than the Talisker 10). Not the best scotch I've had, but this one is totally worth the price (gave it an extra star for the value).

If you like Highland malts as well as the peaty Islay malts then this is wonderful middle ground. Light peat and toffee sweetness. Not quite as complex as say the Taliskers, but worth it.

Young and lively. This smells and tastes like a peaty bourbon. Well done and good value!
