Proof66 Notes

The Isle of Arran Distillery describes itself as one of the few remaining independent scotch distilleries. It was founded recently in 1995 based upon the results of a geological survey for weather conditions and the purity of its water. They use traditional methods of scotch-making, with particular emphasis on non-chill filtered whiskies, making them cloudier and, in some sense, chewier than other scotches.

The Arran 10yr single malt scotch is one that they themselves consider "beautifully made" with a finish that "drifts over the tongue like golden syrup and fades ever so slowly."

Being a rather young distillery (ESTḌ 1995), Isle of Arran is producing some cracking good whisky. The use of high quality casks, 46% ABV, no chill-filtration and natural color gives you an optimal version of a Single Malt. Unlike other Island whiskies, Arran 10 features an unusual tropical character. On the nose, there are exotic fruits, such as papaya, melon and kiwi. The taste is mildly spicy and almost syrupy with cinnamon, sweet vanilla and complex fruity notes, whereas the oak is keeping in the background. A characterful dram with a soft and bittersweet finish. RATING: 3.9/5.0 ≙ 87 pts

This one is an interesting malt. I agree with magezi in that it's very fruity, especially on the nose; I get vanilla, apricots, apples, and maybe a hint of citrus. On the palate there's a surprising oak/black pepper spice that wasn't there in the aroma which livens the experience up a bit. The rest of the palate is a malty sweetness with traits of the fruits mentioned in the nose. The black pepper lingers on the finish. I liked the pour enough to try some of Arran's other offerings, but I'm not sure if this 10 year is worth the going rate where I live.
