Proof66 Notes

Balcones Fifth Anniversary Straight bourbon is, presumably, produced to commemorate the 5th year of their founding. Not currently acknowledged on their website (as of April, 2013), we guess that it is aged for at least 4 years and bottled at cask strength. Given the distillery's strong tradition in corn whisky, we expect a heavy influence of corn in the mash bill supplemented by other grains.

The distiller has adopted the Scottish/Canadian styling of whisky spelled without the "ey", though most American whiskeys are labeled with the "ey".

Balcones Distillery is a craft-distiller in Texas founded by Chip Tate and said to be named for a geological fault line running through Texas. Not only do they craft their own spirits from scratch but actually built and installed all of their equipment. Their whiskey first made market in September of 2009. Buoyed by early success, Balcones sought investment equity for a $15 million expansion through majority shareholder Greg Allen... this resulted in a break-up where Chip Tate left the company after a buyout. The company is now owned and managed by PE Investors, LLC and will move forward with the multi-million dollar expansion in 2015. (The full story offered by the NY Times.)

The smoothness is surprising in this cask strength bottle! This is made for sipping neat. The char from the barrel gives it a nice caramel taste up front.
