Proof66 Notes

Balcones Brimstone whisky was launched in 2011 from the Balcones distillery in Texas. It is made with a 100% base of corn. It is their Baby Blue (though coming in at a scorching 106 proof, higher than the Baby Blue's 92) made with an infusion of smoke from Texas scrub oak in a process that is claimed to be a "tightly held secret" according to the write-up a the Tipsy Texan, where they call it a "cross between a campfire and a glass of peated scotch." For the moment, we have opted to list this as a blended whiskey to group it with other primarily corn whiskey.

In a review at the Tasting Table, they called it "liquid barbeque" and an "all-American answer to scotch."

Balcones Distillery is a craft-distiller in Texas founded by Chip Tate and said to be named for a geological fault line running through Texas. Not only do they craft their own spirits from scratch but actually built and installed all of their equipment. Their whiskey first made market in September of 2009. Buoyed by early success, Balcones sought investment equity for a $15 million expansion through majority shareholder Greg Allen... this resulted in a break-up where Chip Tate left the company after a buyout. The company is now owned and managed by PE Investors, LLC and will move forward with the multi-million dollar expansion in 2015. (The full story offered by the NY Times.)

Awesome produced by a proprietary process, this spirit is actual smoked whisky -- not smoked in the grain bill or with liquor smoke added to the whisky. As such, its amazingly smooth, with a sweet, smoky finish that screams America

If you like smokey flavors, this is one of the best. It tastes like liquid extract from an Indian made smoke signal. Its finish is smooth and clean--dangerously drinkable!

Oh, yeah, baby. Produced by a proprietary process, this spirit is actual smoked whisky -- not smoked in the grain bill or with liquir smoke added to the whisky. As such, it's amazingly smooth, with a sweet, smoky finish that screams Manhattan.
