Proof66 Notes

Balcones French Oak Texas Single Malt is the second launch of the single malt line in the tradition of non chill-filtered whisky made of malted barley--unusual for American whiskey which is more typically corn or rye. According to the interview with Whiskey Wash (Nino Marchetti) the whiskey ages for 9 months in American oak and then 13 months in French oak. This makes for a very young whiskey—no word if smaller barrels, staves, chips, or other accelerants were used—and suggests a celebration of the malted grain itself. It's bottled at a heady 120 proof and limited to an initial run of 200 bottles.

The distiller has adopted the Scottish/Canadian styling of whisky spelled without the "ey", though most American whiskeys are labeled with the "ey".

Balcones Distillery is a craft-distiller in Texas founded by Chip Tate and said to be named for a geological fault line running through Texas. Not only do they craft their own spirits from scratch but actually built and installed all of their equipment. Their whiskey first made market in September of 2009. Buoyed by early success, Balcones sought investment equity for a $15 million expansion through majority shareholder Greg Allen... this resulted in a break-up where Chip Tate left the company after a buyout. The company is now owned and managed by PE Investors, LLC and will move forward with the multi-million dollar expansion in 2015. (The full story offered by the NY Times.)
