Proof66 Notes

The Balvenie 12yr Double Wood scotch gains its name and distinction by maturing in two different types of wood casks: first in whisky (presumably bourbon) barrels followed by a period of time in European sherry casks. They say it is "smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours."

Balvenie Double Wood was awarded the Platinum Medal at the 2010 Sip Awards.

The Balvenie Distillery takes its name from Balvenie Mains--the fields that gave the whisky its grain--and Balvenie Castle, both figuring in the history of the British Isles. It officially founded in 1893 by William Grant and it still grows its own barley from the 1,000 acre farm. The scotch is made with local spring water, lightly peated, and fermented in the unique "Balvenie ball" in the copper pot still that is mean to "concentrate and sweeten" the flavors. Balvenie has its own cooperage to maintain its casks.

I went to my local store looking for a bottle of Talisker 10 year, argh, none to be had, instead I took a chance on this single malt and was pleasantly surprised. Richly sweet (in part to the sherry cask) and slightly smoky on the nose, Balvenies proved to be very nice and accommodating sipped neat...the sherry cask notes are definitely present, peat is minimal, decent finish, not too sour or medicinely, very solid four star scotch and reasonably priced at $50

This is special! Best smelling scotch with a taste like a freshly felled walnut tree. Unbeatable price for such a high quality dram.

Very fruity with a nice warm finish. A little pricey but will buy again.

Doing a side by side with the 14 year Caribbean Cask (the only other Balvenie I have in the house). On the nose the two are close, but I think the 12 edges the 14 out. The nose on the Doublewood is great for a whisky that's only 12 years old. I get cereal grains, honey, and a hint of vanilla and oak. The palate is where the 12 falls behind. Compared to the 14, the 12 has some rough alcohol edges and a little too much sourness. The other characteristics I detect are honeyed sweetness, citrus (orange), dark chocolate, and oak tannins. The chocolate and oak linger on the finish along with some of those sour notes. Considering I paid $35.99 for my bottle it's really not a bad malt, it's just not as good as I remember.

4.3/5, I like it! Nice solid wine influenced whisky. Just ran through a bunch of dalmore's (excellent wine influenced whisky) and this bad boy lives up to his reputation. I actually prefer it to macallan's 12 at this point (recent batch's haven't done it for me).

The rich colour , the fine honey whiff and the strong body is what i loved about this scotch. A cold monsoon evening and a balvaline go perfectly well. the slow impact leaves you wanting for more

There is nothing better to me in the winter then the balvenie. Its just amazing in every way. Might be my favorite all time scotches. I can barely get any trace of peat at all just pure crafted flavor's of nutmeg honey cinnamon and oak.MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH.. 5 stars, wonderful.!

A nice, honey-ed, whisky that served as my first instructor into single-malt Scotch.  This should have a place alongside the more common Glenlivet and Glenfidditch at any bar that takes it's craft seriously.  I've now come to prefer the 14-yr Carribean Cask expression but I'll never leave this whisky out of the rotation.  It occupies the same niche to me as Maker's Mark, Bombay Sapphire, and Grand Marnier; spirits of which I never tire and which I would do well to always keep on hand.

I usually like a smokier scotch but this is my exception. Two months in the sherry cask doesn't sound like much but it's just right.Smooth and flavorful with a wonderful finish and an excellent price for a double wood.

A very interesting and complex malt for the money. A chance to try a double wood without breaking the bank.

This is a very interesting scotch... very, very low on the peat (it almost tastes more like Irish whiskey) and then these deep sherry overtones due to the second finish. I think scotch purists/idolaters might have a little trouble with it; but if you're looking for something different and unusual, I think it's a very well-made scotch.
