Proof66 Notes

Balvenie 12yr Single Barrel is a high-proof entry into their lineup of younger-aged scotch. In this case, they use first-fill oak barrels... that is, ex-bourbon barrels that have been introduced to scotch for the first time (rather than a second, third, and so on). They note that each barrel is specifically selected and that no more than 300 bottles are produced ("drawn") from a single barrel, acknowledging that there will be some variation in taste from bottle to bottle.

About the Producer:

The Balvenie Distillery takes its name from Balvenie Mains--the fields that gave the whisky its grain--and Balvenie Castle, both figuring in the history of the British Isles. It officially founded in 1893 by William Grant and it still grows its own barley from the 1,000 acre farm. The scotch is made with local spring water, lightly peated, and fermented in the unique "Balvenie ball" in the copper pot still that is meant to "concentrate and sweeten" the flavors. Balvenie has its own cooperage to maintain its casks.

Very good scotch. Takes the classic Balvenie flavor profile, minus the sherry, and cranks the oak up a few levels. Being twice the price of the Doublewood though I'm not sure this one is worth the going rate. For a few bucks more one could get the 15 year single barrel which is a better whisky.

Very light. Can taste more bourbon flavor. Nice and crisp.
