Proof66 Notes

The Balvenie Caribbean cask is a single malt scotch aged for 14 years and then finished in rum barrels. While it is somewhat traditional for scotches to finish in sherry or other wine casks, it is somewhat more unusual for rum casks to be used. In Balvenie's press release, they said that the 14yr Caribbean Cask was mean to follow "the acclaim of 2008's limited edition Balvenie 17 Year Old Rum Cask, and the subsequent popularity of rum cask-finished whiskies, with a whisky that bears all the hallmarks of the Balvenie, but with an added level of complexity that comes from finishing the whisky in casks that once held Caribbean rum."

Another spirit I found to have improved over time! I liked it when I first opened the bottle but I LOVE this stuff now after having the bottled opened for about 6 weeks. Very complex for being as smooth as it is. You could really get yourself in trouble with this Scotch if you’re not careful. It is a little on the sweet side (given the aging in the rum casks), but certainly not cloyingly sweet to the point of going too far. I’m not a big rum fan, but the rum casks really help add depth and extra layers of flavor that I think make this special and unique. I gave the 12 year Doublewood 4 Stars and although I paid about $12 more for this bottle, I’d definitely say its worth the price increase! Highly recommend!

I love rum, so I had high hopes for this one. Sadly, I was disappointed. There's lots of vanilla and molasses on the nose that smother the typical fruits and spice from Speyside (good start), but the palate is different. It kinda starts off the way it smells, but very quickly, it turns nutty and dry with a good amount of oak spice. That might be appealing to some, but I personally prefer a more balanced finish. While it doesn't float my boat, it's still decent whisky if you're looking for rum flavor without the sweetness.

Its... good. The double wood is still better, in my opinion. Imagine the double wood with a hint of Appletons (a smokier, less sweet rum). Its definitely evident, but not overly rum flavored. Not bad.

When I think of rum I think of brown sugar, molasses, and a hefty dose of sweetness. I was half expecting that when I tried this, so when it turned out to be much more subtle I was very pleasantly surprised. I think experienced scotch drinkers will appreciate this one. It doesn't have any of the unrefined edges that the 12 year Doublewood has either.

Absolutely amazing and perfectly balanced. The sweetness from the rum casks is very mild and there is a subtle smokey linger on the finish. Very well done and something not to pass up if you get a chance to try it. This will become a standard in my home bar.

A wonderful spirit which to me summarizes everything I love about the Balvenie's whiskies!  I have a soft spot for this distillery as the first single malt Scotch that I really had the opportunity to savor was a sampler of 3 or 4 50mL bottles of Balvenie whiskies.  My first favorite Scotch was the 12-yr Doublewood, however as I've tasted more quality whiskies, my palate now prefers a bit less sweetness than that very estimable spirit.  The 14-yr Carribean Cask really hits the sweet (or in this case, the not-quite-as-sweet) spot for me!  I drink bourbon on a much more regular basis due to cost and availability; however, when I want that next level of smooth, sweet, complexity this is exactly what I'm seeking.
