Proof66 Notes

The Balvenie 17yr Double Wood is an older version of their popular 12yr Double Wood. It’s launch coincided with the 50th anniversary of Malt Master David Stewart. It is named for its maturation in different types of wood: American bourbon barrels and European sherry casks.

In a an unusually complimentary review from Anthony Dias Blue in the December, 2012 Tasting Panel Magazine, he awarded it 95pts and deemed it to have a "long, smooth toasty finish" that was "elegant and long."

About the Producer:

The Balvenie Distillery takes its name from Balvenie Mains--the fields that gave the whisky its grain--and Balvenie Castle, both figuring in the history of the British Isles. It officially founded in 1893 by William Grant and it still grows its own barley from the 1,000 acre farm. The scotch is made with local spring water, lightly peated, and fermented in the unique "Balvenie ball" in the copper pot still that is mean to "concentrate and sweeten" the flavors. Balvenie has its own cooperage to maintain its casks.

Simply a fantastic malt. Deeper and richer than the 12 year. Has no rough edges at all. Only thing I would change is increasing the ABV. At somewhere between 96 and 110 proof I think this would be near flawless.

4.2/5, it's solid but prefer the 12. extra age hasn't improved this scotch the way I would have preferred. Funny, I preferred the regular 12 too the regular 15 as well... 21 is up next, I hope he breaks the trend

Tried this for the first time today, a real treat! Definitely superior to the 12 yr variant.
