Liquor Review Notes:
The Balvenie Distillery takes its name from Balvenie Mains--the fields that gave the whisky its grain--and Balvenie Castle, both figuring in the history of the British Isles. It officially founded in 1893 by William Grant and it still grows its own barley from the 1,000 acre farm. The scotch is made with local spring water, lightly peated, and fermented in the unique "Balvenie ball" in the copper pot still that is mean to "concentrate and sweeten" the flavors. Balvenie has its own cooperage to maintain its casks.Balvenie offers a range of scotch whiskies as well as several limited editions creating expressions in different woods and aging. It continues to be owned by William Grant and Sons.
The Balvenie 21yr Port Wood scotch is a marriage of "rare" Balvenie scotch that has been aged in port wine casks. lease note: an alert reader clued us in to the fact that there are two expressions: one chill-filtered and a classic 86 proof and the other non-chill filtered and at higher proof. This is the filtered version, which will offer a lighter, fresher body.
