Proof66 Notes

Bernheim claims to be the only whiskey that is distilled solely from wheat--or in their words, "soft winter wheat."
Note: "bourbon" must be at least 50% corn.

A "bourbon" for those who don't like bourbon. A lot of the good parts of the bourbon taste, like the alligator-charred oak barrels. But UNLIKE bourbon, no sweet aftertaste!!! Finish is a rather dry soft fade than a punch in the face of corn sweetness. A pleasant drink neat if you want a bourbon for a change of pace, but without overwhelming sweetness of a corn based spirit.

Great coppery color. Mildly sweet nose. Enters with a slight burn and then turns honey butter sweet. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Smooth, pleasant finish. Ice melt or water removes any semblance of a finish, so if you like your whiskey cold keep it in the fridge. Definitely prefer this one neat. A good bottle to keep on hand if you want to take a break from your favorite bourbon. Heaven Hills has some truly great, well-priced spirits on the market.

Very tasty! Smooth and sweet for those times when you're not in a wind-in-your-face kind of mood. Vanilla and fruit on the nose, vanilla/oak and a bit of tannin on the palate, and a tiny bit of punch from the higher proof, but still smooth as silk. About the best whiskey you can find to introduce a noob to the world of whiskey, but also delicious for an aficionado. I love that there is no color added. A long delicious finish makes this a winner. I will absolutely be buying more...

This is a great, dryer and more nuanced whiskey for those seeking something similar to but distinct from the typical bourbon. Very enjoyable straight. The wheat flavor comes through true- some notes of caramel as well. Flavors are not terribly strong, so some may find it bland. I quite enjoy it.

I am giving Bernheim a 3 only because I cant give it a 3.5 and I dont want to give it a 4. It is very good but nothing stands out as memorable. This is my first wheat whiskey non bourbon tasting. I want to try Parkers Heritage Wheat Whiskey which I hear is Bernheim but aged at 13 years.

A good substitute for bourbon, and if you didn't do any research (nothing wrong with that of course, some people just want to drink their drink) you'd be forgiven for mistaking for a bourbon. Tastes just like one, but wheat is the primary grain, making it technically a "wheated whiskey". At first taste, it's a little harsh and acidic with a strong sourdough smell, but diluting it with a little water completely switches around the flavor palette. Some spirits just taste weaker with water, this one tastes wholly different. Scents of apple pie and buckwheat, thick bodied mouth feel, and lots of the classic burnt sugar caramel found in so many good bourbons. A decent spirit with no real downside, but I'd rather go for a real straight-ahead bourbon, rye, or high-proof spirit. Personal taste.

Sweet with some burn at first. At 90 proof it needs just a little water or a single ice cube . Then it becomes soft and sweet. Little to no char from the barrel and doesn't resemble your average whiskey. No dryness in the finish, almost like a brandy. I'm not a fan of Makers Mark but this is a wheat whiskey worth trying!

This isn't a very complex whiskey, but it's a solid one with a nice mouthfeel and a good balance of fruit, candy and spice flavors to make things interesting, while finishing with enough wood presence to show some age.

Smells like bourbon. Tastes like bourbon, but with every edge smoothed out. No sharp flavors. Without the rye spice and barrel char that I normally enjoy I thought this would be boring. I was mistaken. Very enjoyable.

It's pretty good. 3.5 stars is probably more accurate, but this is a nice drink. It doesn't overwhelm you with flavor, but it is an easy drinking wheat whiskey. It's very affordable and worth a shot for whiskey fans.

I can see this being a top notch wheat whiskey. But in the grand scheme of bourbons, its just not as good as a lot of similarly priced. It's definitely strong, no doubt at all about the wheat presence. Not bad by any stretch, just not something that I'd stock frequently

This was a very pleasant find and surprise. I'm often a little leery of buying whiskey too far off the beaten path that might be a mere gimmick--let this review give others who are also leery confidence to buy. The aroma is very similar to bourbon but it has a very soft, almost brandy-like flavor. Not that it tastes of grape (rather French bread) but the character and quality is more like a "wheat brandy" or even a white wine. It's very, very pleasant with none of the heavy-char, asphalt finish so often found in aged bourbon. I loved this whiskey. For those who favor wheated bourbons like Pappy Van Winkle, Weller, or Maker's Mark, I think you may be converted to Bernheim. It's one potential flaw is the lack of a long-finish, which is why I liken it to a wine rather than a whiskey. But I loved it; I'm a convert.

A decent every day wheated whiskey. A nice change from your every day whiskey, be it corn or rye heavy mash. The fact this is 100% wheat will surpise you. A little heat but as to be expected from a whiskey. I tasted a little honey in the bottle...
