Proof66 Notes

Black Bottle blended scotch bills itself as "daringly different..." quite a feat for a 100yr old heritage. The whisky itself stems from Gordon Graham of the late 1800s, who launched Black Bottle in 1879 named for the black German-made glass they used in production. Black Bottle is produced by Burn Stewart Distilleries, which was sold to the Distell Group of South Africa in 2013.

The scotch itself is a blend of Islay single malt, which enjoys a well-earned reputation of heavy smoke and peat flavors along wth a dash of salt-sea air;

The new black bottle is now in an actual black bottle, the peat is essentially gone and the grain whisky dominates. Smells and tastes rather cheap I'm afraid, Dewars White Label is a much better option in this price range

Just got a bottle of this today. It is thus far my favorite blended scotch I have tasted. It has got a nice peaty taste, but it is much more mellow than a typical Islay single malt. Quite well balanced with decent complexity. I would be happy to sip this anytime, though I must admit that I prefer the typical Laphroaig 10 year, though the price on this was excellent (~$20 compared to ~$30 for Laphroaig 10).

Apparently this blend and its bottling has changed this year. I never got a chance to try the legacy green-bottled Black Bottle, so I can't offer a comparison, but I have sampled the new version in the flask-shaped black bottling. Its flavor is quite interesting for a blend, with more than a whiff of peaty smokiness and some anise and other herbal/medicinal notes that become more noticeable in the finish. Works fine neat, on rocks or with club soda. The most interesting dram I've found anywhere near this price range.

A good balance between sweetness, saltiness, and a little bit of Islay "peatiness". It's amazing that a bottle only costs 20 bucks. Somebody should tell the Black Bottle folks that their whisky isn't half bad.

Meh, not too crazy about this. I was using it as an intro into Scotch, but I vastly preferred JW Black to this. Not awful and the price is right but I will be paying up to try other examples of blended Scotches from now on.

If you kinda sorta like peaty smokiness but can't stand the in-your-face intensity of Laphroaig, this is your tipple! A better value than Johnnie Walker Black (which is also very good and perhaps the next step down on the peat-intensity scale, but somewhat overpriced).

Not the best Scotch out there but not bad for a blend.

This is a fantastic introduction to Islay malts. It's what converted me from a Bourbon drinker into a Scotch drinker. Very smooth, peaty scent with a smooth taste, finishing with a peaty burn. A subtle introduction to Islay.

Black bottle is a very nice blended scotch. Has a lot of smoke in the aroma. Taste is more smoke and a medium minus body. Dried fruit and slightly vegetal with a noticeable saline finish. $20

Blended scotches are a common animal; you can find them in any bar. It's no small thing, however, when someone creates a blended Islay scotch. And not only does this one surprise with the uniqueness of its kind, but it's also likely to fool any notions of what a blended Islay might be like. This scotch is not some limited run, smoke-heaving one-off designed as a challenge to the stoutest of scotch drinkers. This is a very refined, tasteful scotch that can and should stand amongst any other scotches in your collection, blended or single malt. So far for me, if there is a blend that challenges the storied Johnnie Walker Black for the same or slightly more money, this is it. It has a clean fruitiness mixed with a touch of sweet, with a dab of spiciness to augment its feint smoky character. I definitely recommend this one, as it is not the typical blend, and it will prove its worth over the price you pay.
