Proof66 Notes

Blanton's bourbon is a popular premium bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery that contains the signature, rye notes for which they are famous. It is named for Colonel Albert Blanton, who is said to have entertained his friends with bourbon from "Warehouse H." The idea of handpicked barrels turned into the 1984 launch of what they consider to be the very first bourbon entry into the "ultra-premium whiskey market."

This is the classic Blanton's expression and regarded as iconic in many parts of Kentucky.

Was lucky enough to score a bottle of this in September and saved it for a family Thanksgiving "get together" at a mountain rental cabin. The nose was incredible and very unique. So different than anything else that I've experienced that I checked my glass to make sure it didn't have some type of fragranced soap residue in it. Leather, polished wood, campfire smoke, butterscotch pudding and baking spices. This is one I could nose for hours. It's what I imagine sitting in an old leather chair in front of a fire in a study surrounded by old books while a big holiday meal is being prepared down the hall would smell like. On the palate this one enters with a butterscotch/caramel/coconut sweetness. Also honey and chocolate with pleasant oak and a floral note throughout. Nice thick mouthfeel with a slightly drying smooth finish. I can see this being a once a year (or whenever I can find it) purchase that I break out for special occasions. I envy the folks who can find this consistently and can find it at sale prices.

I particularly wanted to do a good review for this bourbon; so here goes-Barrel #437-dumped 1-7-16- NAS- 93 proof. There is also a lot of info on registry, rick house etc. on the impressive label. 1 and 1/2 oz. in a Glencairn glass. Nose: Very pleasant with an impact of "spiced apple pie with rum sauce" Also darker fruits (date & raisin) amid an alcohol background accented by sweet leather. Some sweet Oak and a little smoke. On to the taste=The entry has a pronounced "hot chocolate" flavor not detected in the nose. It's quite sweet (notice that word keeps popping up?) with absolutely no alcohol burn. Not all of the nose comes through to the taste. The Rye spice is subdued. It is quite "feminine" with the flavors of English breakfast tea combined with mildly spiced apple pie with a chocolate/rum sauce. It is delicious and for some it may just be perfect, especially if they find bourbon to be too assertive. I thought this Blantons was going to be more like a Bookers or an E.H. Taylor with a higher rye content and a controlled chest warming glow, but it was short in those attributes. Each to his own. For me= 4 stars.

Cranecreek (2016-10-01):
May I add one more thing here-It is a Single Barrel so maybe my bottle came from an inferior barrel.

KaiserSoze (2016-10-05):
Excellent, detailed and honest review! I think it’s very easy to set your expectations high when it comes to a bottle like this, so it’s no surprise that we sometimes get a little disappointed. I think you hit the nail on the head when you stated you found the taste to be “feminine”, but I think that’s why I myself, and I think others, find it so approachable. I find Blanton’s to be extremely complex, but for the price tag, it should be! From what you say you were “hoping for” in the flavor profile, give Rock Hill Farms a shot….if you can find it! It’s the exact same Mash Bill as Blanton’s (and standard Buffalo Trace). It’s 100 proof and is the most complex bourbon I’ve ever had which includes 3 barrel proof bourbons. I found it had more of that rye spice flavor that really adds to the complexity. Cheers!

I still can't wrap my head around how complex this is while being so incredibly smooth. Perfect nose with a little bit of everything going on in the flavor profile. Fruity, sweet, cinnamon spice, and oak all wrapped into a bourbon that will always have a place at the top of my list. Beautiful bottle too! This, along with Elmer T Lee (both BT Mash Bill #2) are both gems. This isn't cheap, but believe the hype.

The bottle could be construed as quite pretentious with its fishnet cover, hand-grenade shaped bottle, and its horse racing cap ornament, leaving one to wonder if this is a gimmicky marketing ploy. However, at closer glance its apparent this is an authentic, classy presentation of the bourbon. Care and pride are evident and I feel like I am getting personalized service knowing this is bourbon from barrel 1309, rick number 4, warehouse H, and bottled in midsummer on July 21, 2016. Without even opening the bottle, I know this is a quality item. I open the bottle and get the aroma of Kentucky on a cool summer day. The taste is hi-fidelity bourbon with elegant tones of equal parts caramel and subdued floral (lavender?) creating a pleasant combination of taste and fresh mouthfeel. As I ponder this bourbon I catch a glimpse of the horse-racing cap ornament and reminisce of memorable stretch run duels seen from the rail. I'm going to gather up a stake to both go to the races for a day and also to purchase another bottle of this Kentucky Jewel.

Very nice Bourbon .Easy to drink.Lots of flavor, vanilla, honey, caramel, and a little spice is just nice.I originally gave this a fair review, because I only had it one time in a bar.The bar definitely had something different in the bottle.Pour it, add a few drops of water and let it breath.Enjoy.

I don't really have much to say about Blanton's that one of the other reviewers hasn't said already. This as an awesome spirit, one of my very favorites ever. Basically this, Four Roses Single Barrel, and Woodford are my personal choices for best non-cask strength bourbons ever. I haven't bought a bottle of this yet because its a bit pricier than the other 2, but its only a matter of time until I do. Apart from the price, there is little fault to find in Blanton's, its smooth as silk with a fairly thick body and a delicious sweetness that develops into a long lingering finish. I get caramel, vanilla, toffee, maybe a hint of baked apple, a hint of orange peel, and a sweet, rich corn. If you like Buffalo Trace you will probably love Blanton's (though I do not promise you'll consider it to be worth double the price). I've had this on ice (or rather with a single ice ball) and neat. The description I just gave was on ice. Neat it tingles a bit (kind of like a more refined Wild Turkey 101, not that Turkey is a bad sipper either), and a bit of rye spice comes out that I did not find at all with the ice ball. Neat it still has a wonderful sweetness, a gentlemanly smoothness, and a lovely lingering finish, although the rye makes some of the candied notes tougher to pick out. My iced dram was enjoyed partly with a 21 day old prime rib eye (it was my birthday) and it did not stand up well to the steak (If I ever redo that meal I'll drink Woodford with the steak and Blanton's with the soup instead of the other way around). It's not as spicy as Woodford or OF Signature, but the finish is longer, and it might be even smoother than Woodford (Though Blanton's is official NAS, its most likely significantly older than Woodford). So who is this for? Anyone with pockets deep enough to regularly shell out $50 or more for a fifth of bourbon, and also anyone looking for a something special to share with friends some of whom are whiskey/bourbon drinkers and some who aren't (because you can share a bottle of this with someone who thinks Jack is strong stuff, Booker's you can't so much do that) five out of five stars.

I am not a huge bourbon fan, but this one knocked my socks off! The bottle is classy looking as well. I would give 4.5 stars for its smoothness and overall flavor profile. At $50 a bottle this is not your daily sipper which is why i didnt give it five stars.

A very good bourbon that goes down about as smooth as any other whiskey I've ever had. And that's a bit of a turn off for me. It's a good bourbon for it's price point, but if you're looking for something that has a bit of a bite to it, this isn't it. I would easily recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it but it certainly doesn't live up to the lofty expectations I had for it when I first heard about it.

One of my favorite bourbons at this price point, or any other. Smooth, almost like Scotch, but still with the bourbon "burn." Sweet taste. If it was cheaper, I'd drink this as my daily drink instead of Buffalo Trace. I only drink it neat as it needs no ice or water to open it up, it's already there.

I recently went to the Bourbon Distiller's Annual Gala in Kentucky and tasted about 18 different bourbons and ryes in one night, all of which were single barrel, small batch, or extra aged. After getting through things like Maker's 46, Michter's 10yr Rye, Four Roses Single Barrel, Woodford, Knob, Elijah 12yr, Parker's etc, this one did not stand out as making a great impression. It measured up ok to some, but it was trounced in terms of flavor and smoothness by several of the others, some from the same distillery. Buffalo Trace makes many better products, and Weller 12yr, Stagg Jr, and Sazerac will all give you a better tasting experience than this. I found the flavor muffled and one-dimensional, all I tasted was oak and smoke, and it didn't open up after adding water or letting it air out. The high opinion of it on this site confounds me, but it's not terribly offensive.

4.15/5; It is not as easy to drink as bt but has loads more complexity and overall better taste and better pour. Other reviews highlight the value and I concur. This one is worth a buy. If you've done mm jack and Jim and wondering where to go I'd say head here. It's a premium bourbon that is very affordable and easy to find. For me it's a bar staple

My birthday present to myself. Excellent. Has a hint of "muskiness" that's hard to describe, though I like it. Oak done just right too. Oaky without being too astringent and drying. The folks at Blanton's are truly skilled at their craft.

This stuff is excellent. It has a nice, sweet taste and is exceptionally smooth. If it was cheaper (or I was wealthier) this would be my daily bourbon. In addition, the bottling is cool if you're into that sort of thing.

This and Four Roses Small Batch are my 1a and 1b. Any smoother and you'd have to put a diaper on it. It's sweet on the tongue with a nice warmth going down. The bottle and handwritten labels are a nice touch.

Great flavor and a pleasure to drink. Goes down and easy and opens up nicely. When it's neat there is a hint of musk, vanilla, spice, and of course barrel. Add a little water and it changed to have intense spice(cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves), orange rind(was suprised to find this), and carmel.

I love this whisk[e]y. Admittedly, its hard to fault anything coming out of the Buffalo Trace distillery and I certainly haven't been able to find one other than the bottom of the bottle. The sweet and fruity flavour of this corn whiskey makes for a luscious combination and the extra proof helps bring out the true manliness, and by that I mean wellroundedness of this beverage. This little fella even made it into a few of my wedding pictures. Even she can't help liking this one.

Disclaimer: I love everything that comes out of the Buffalo Trace distillery, so Im a bit of homer when it comes to this stuff. It found it similar to Buffalo Trace-- pleasantly sweet with a long dry finish-- but oakier. They must age it longer. Highly recommended. Blantons sells for $40/ bottle at Total Wine. Cant beat that value.

A little lacking in the finish and body compared to some of their other efforts, but well made. Lean, almost more in the style of a Tennesee Whisky. A touch pricey but unlike many in its price range, worth it. As a side note we opened a bottle from 1993 which, while much the same in many respects, had a somewhat rougher and hotter finish to it, more reminiscent of bourbon stocks from that period. It's obvious that more care and attention was being paid to bourbon starting in the 1980's and we are starting to see the benefits.
