Proof66 Notes

The Bowmore Distillery was officially founded in 1779 on the island of Hebridean Island of Islay. They take pride in hand-turning their barley in the malting room in the traditional practice, something seldom done in the modern era. They dry the barley over peat smoke and mature the whisky in casks facing the sea. Bowmore was purchased by Morrison Bowmore Distilleries in 1963, which itself was purchased by Suntory in 1994.

The Bowmore Legend single malt Islay scotch is a blend of of seven, eight, and nine year scotches.

I bought this scotch on a whim. At $24 I figured it can't be that bad. Wrong. I do enjoy a nicely peated scotch, in fact that's one of the traits I look for. But this taste of burnt peat, in a very bad way. Hours later even after drinking a considerable amount of southern sweet tea I can still taste a burnt cigar/tobacco taste on the back of my tongue, very unpleasant. Nose has that of smoke and iodine. Finish is dull, straight forward, and boring. For the price I'd much rather have a Speyburn 10 for $20.

This is just about the cheapest single malt made, but my girlfriend and I find that it is nearly as good as our favorite, Oban, at a third the cost. This has become our standard daily scotch. Try it.
