Proof66 Notes

Breckenridge Bourbon Whiskey is one of the first whiskey releases from the distillery. It is a younger bourbon aged for 2 years in 53 gallon white oak barres prior to bottling. The mash bill is 56% yellow corn, 38% green rye and 6% malted barley. From our notions here at Proof66, this is a rye-recipe bourbon that suggests a spicier, more robust flavor kick than softer bourbons with more corn or wheat content. It is blended down with Rocky Mountain snowmelt, which they believe gives a special flavor profile to the bourbon.

Here at Proof66, we had the opportunity to try Breckenridge Bourbon at the 2012 Distill America event in Madison, Wisconsin. We declared it one of the 12 best spirits of the event saying, "Smooth and flavorful, it can as easily be sipped and mixed in classic bourbon cocktails."

Breckenridge Distillery is a "grain to glass" microdistillery founded and located in that most famous of all North American snow skiing locations, Breckenridge, Colorado. It is run by Bryan Nolt and Jordan Via, who met when Via was conducting a whisey class in California attended by radiologist Bryan Nolt. They use a traditional copper pot-style still. This spirit would definitely benefit from more time in the barrel to mellow this hooch out. I would like to see what a ten or fifteen year would present

Absolutely agree with degbert on this one. There's something missing in what a bourbon purist would be looking for in the profile. It finishes awful hot for 86 proof and there's a bit of needling to go with it. Serviceable, but not something I would go distances to purchase.

This is not subtle bourbon. It's big, rough, smoky, and above all young; I found it the whisky equivalent of a teenage boy, bullying nerds and hitting each other in the nards then posting the video on Youtube. It's not without a certain charm -- the maple notes are nice -- but like teenage boys, there's some hollowness at the center that will only fill with age and maturity. It might even be fun under the right circumstances, but mostly it's just...young

Breckenridge has come out—in a field that is depressingly filled with candy-flavored vodkas and un-aged whiskeys—with something that brings class and sophistication far beyond their mere 2 years of aging. It’s everything that should be coming from an upstart distillery. While we won’t say it can go toe-to-toe with the decades-plus award winners coming from Kentucky, it can easily overmatch any standard bourbon on the market and run with some of the best.

Almost spicy in aroma and flavor. Slight burn neat. Excellent as the flavor carries through into cocktails
