Proof66 Notes

The Buchanan's 18yr is a blend of aged scotch whiskies and is considered one of their premium offerings... in our experience, a ripe old age for blended scotch.

A Diageo product, so expect caramel color and chill filtration, and don't expect a single cask single malt high proof mouth explosion, this is a blend purposely designed to be as smooth and easy drinking as possible, and it nails it...somewhat similar to the Johnnie Walker Gold and Platinum Labels...one negative is that the lovely peat tones in the 12 and Masters are quite a bit more subdued and yielding to sweetness in the 18, and not a real lingering finish, but in the end a recommended blend, also please correct the proof, this is an 80 proof product, not 86.

Proof66 Staff (2016-11-21):
Hello... thanks for your note on the bottling proof. Fortunately, we have a bottle of our very own! Staring at it, we can verify with our own eyes that it claims an 86 bottling proof. That said, the last two San Francisco reports have put it at 80 proof so we've edited here accordingly; possibly Diageo has recently adjusted the bottling proof. (That might also explain the drop in ratings.)

Shmotch (2016-11-25):
Thank you for the comment. I wrote to Buchanans and a rep responded that it is both, lower proof is for the US market, higher for Europe

Very cool (though I swore we bought that in Illinois). The slightly varying proofs is something we try to track as separate listings on many labels since that can have a huge effect on the ratings and taste of a spirit (cross reference the Maker's Mark controversey among others). If you like, we'll split this into two separate labels so that you can rate them independently of each other. Just say the word!

Horrid. Tastes like someone filtered it through dirt cigarettes have been crushed out in. It's like somebody added "peaty" flavour the way bad barbecuers add liquid smoke to their meat. Only good for drinking when you're too drunk to appreciate good whisky.

I agree with NeatPour's review. I tried this whisky for the same reason (popularity/accolades on this site) and have the same opinion of the quality and flavor profile. It really reminds of the Johnnie Walker Gold and Blue labels, but at the appropriate price (I paid $60 for mine). It's a really good blend, but I would just prefer something a little more bold and with a finish that doesn't disappear in the amount of time it takes to swallow.

I had the great pleasure of enjoying this tonight. This can only be described as a smooth ballroom dance. There is a very well balanced combination of peat and smoke on the finish. I say combination instead of blend because the peat comes first and then quickly fades into a subtle smoke. Excellent.

I've been looking for this scotch for a while after the big competitive results. Finally found a bottle (I got mine for $79). It turns out, this is about the smoothest, most approachable scotch I've ever tasted. It's like a domesticated peat... it's pleasant rather than predatory. The flavor lingers without sticking like duct tape. It can easily be drunk neat rather than needing some dilution. It doesn't carry the power of some single malts but it's an impressive achievement in a blend.

4.5 Stars, I would never have tried this scotch without the recommendation from this website (diageo doesn't market it... which is a mistake IMO). The reviews are good and the price is reasonable so I picked up a bottle. I'll admit my expectations were high and after my first glass I wasn't blown away. For whatever reason, I don't get the same layering of flavors in blends as I do in single malts. For me, blends seem to play different notes simultaneously where singles play them one after another. For this lovely blend the notes are sweet & smokey played together with a gentle finish. A great blend & a bottle worth buying. This is another one of those scotches that is easy to please everyone. For how safe and commercial the flavor of this is it's a mistake that it doesn't have a larger following

Price in the Dallas area for this is $90. Might consider updating your estimated price of $50.
