Proof66 Notes

Buffalo Trace Bourbon—the namesake and flagship of the distillery—is one of the more famous bourbons out of Kentucky. It uses a distinct mash bill of Indian corn, rye, and barley. They take especial care in their barrel selection using "center ring" wood from trees between 70 and 80 years old. They claim to have the highest rejection rate for barrels in the industry. The whiskey chill-filtered and bottled for a taste that "pleasantly sweet" with a "long dry finish."

2015 Update: with their gold award at the 2015 and double gold in 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, this bourbon solidifies its standing as one of the top-rated bourbons on our website, which makes it stand out from more famous and greatly more expensive scotch and similar whiskey. For more about our scoring methodology, a lot of answers are here. But seeing this humble bourbon among such luminaries, it draws questioning glances at its score. For that reason, it's worth reiterating: this is a bourbon that has, year over year, consistently received very high ratings from a number of critical bodies; our system at Proof66 is designed to reward that fact.

One doesn't often think of buffalo in Kentucky but the distillery takes its name from the buffalo path (or "trace") that led to the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County. Buffalo Trace Distillery takes pride in the limestone water (being notably free of iron) and good soil conditions for grain. The site has had a working distillery since 1787 but the official Buffalo Trace first began operation in 1857. It obtained one of only four permits offered during Prohibition to maintain production for "medicinal purposes." Today, the distillery sits on a picturesque 119 acres and produces several labels of bourbon.
Buffalo Trace was named Distillery of the Year by the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It was named a national historic landmark in 2013.

I just realized I have never reviewed this…a consistent classic! Great nose, complex flavors, but very drinkable, and goes well in any bourbon cocktail! Vanilla & Caramel on the nose - caramel popcorn, toasted oak, and a nice cinnamon spice on the palate with somewhat of a short finish, but very pleasant of sweet corn. At $26 for a 750ml bottle, you can’t go wrong!

It has a wonderful nose with vanilla, oak, and honey. The entry taste is heated honey, citrus, and oak..The finish burns with citrus, and then honey overtones. There are better bourbons in its price range. This bourbon is too sweet and has too much burn for me It is too young, and the distiller sweeten it up to blunt the burn.

Buffalo Trace is arguably the best purchase you can make to obtain a bourbon that will appeal to everyone from the casual partaker to an aficionado. (you are welcome Sazerac) Good bourbon should deliver a spirit with tastes of "Sweet Oak-Vanilla-Butterscotch or Toffee-honey-some Rye spiciness and perhaps additional flavors" The bare legal minimum of alcohol as proof for bourbon is 80 %. On the taste part Buffalo Trace delivers all of the traditional tastes and then bottles their bourbon at 90 proof. They manage to do that and then price it at the mid twenties $$. Not an easy task. Just as Jim Beams Knob Creek introduces one to a higher level of bourbon this Buffalo Trace pushes the limit on what anyone can expect at the mid-shelf level. There are exceptions, and one is "Old Granddad 114"-Evan Williams Single Barrel (not 2007) or you can obtain 95% of Buffalo Trace's tastes and only sacrifice 2% alcohol ABV in Evan Williams "1783" bourbon-and for $10 less ! Personally, although I think Buffalo Trace is a very good expression, it's a bit too sweet and the complex attributes I prefer in a bourbon are missing.

At least a four and really rating a 4.5%. This bourbon lets you know what you are drinking right off the bat and it will have that bourbon burn. That is what really impresses me is the that burn comes in at the back of the throat. Very nice caramel and vanilla notes on the nose also.I like this bourbon and will definitely place it on my regular purchase list at my local Total Wine.

The best one can find for the money. Sweetish, spicy, corn, and the extra kick from the 90 proof, all add up to a fantastic bourbon at any price, but for $25 it's phenomenal.

An excellent all around bourbon with lots of flavors. At about $20-30 a bottle, this is easily among the best value bourbons on the market as well. My only criticism is that it may be a bit overhyped- on this site, it is considered the top bourbon at the moment and while it is among the best, the hype does elevate it a tad over what it actually is. Because of the low price, this stuff is great straight or mixed. Straight, there are a few others I would prefer- Angel and Knob come to mind, and some of the rarer and expensive casks- but mixed I cannot name a better bourbon. In particularly delicate drinks (think floral or light citrus flavors), you can very much tell the difference between this and Beam or Evan. The latter are also quite good in a mixed drink, but Buffalo really adds a lot.

I'm not a fan of Buffalo Trace, though paradoxically I frequently recommend it to others. My rating is an attempt to split the difference. On my tongue alone its 2 stars, but if you ask me whether you should try it, this is 4 stars. I find this to be very smooth for 90 proof, and this is an 8 year old (twice the minimum age required for a "Straight Bourbon" with no age statement) small batch bourbon, so for the $25-$30 a fifth of this costs in my part of the world, this is about the best quality Bourbon you can get for the price. Why don't I like it then? I find BT quite bland. It disappears on me in a highball, sour, or old fashioned or even on the rocks, and even neat I still don't feel like there's much going on. I get a faint caramel nose. On the tongue I get some sweetness, some alcohol, and occasionally some very faint corn/grassy notes. I suspect the main culprit is a lack of rye in the mashbill (BT is made with 8% rye), as I usually prefer higher rye whiskies, although where its aged may also play a part (the one BT brand I am a fan of is Blanton's which is aged in a heated warehouse, which BT itself is not). So I think Buffalo Trace is worth a try for most people, and will probably become a go-to for you if you typically like a lower rye mash (for example I've yet to meet a fan of Maker's Mark who didn't also like BT), but I will not be buying a bottle for myself again.

A bit of oak on the nose, some ethanol and it hasn't opened up yet. Sweet on the palate and in the back of the mouth but oakey sweet, not vanilla. 5 drops of water hasn't improved the nose except the oak has opened somewhat. The overall effect is this is a mild bourbon, with nothing outstanding in terms of flavor. Some faint sweetness appears in the finish, which is fairly longish. I wouldn't place this above the Evan Williams 2006 SB overall (which is a timid bourbon), and since there is no age statement, I dropped one star. I am not fond of NAS bourbon, especially when it is middlin and not outstanding. My expectation is that it would "disappear" with some ice. The various Bonded offerings are fine with me, as there is the minimum 4 years. I 'd rather have the rough edges, I guess. So. 3 stars and could been more with an age statement. Overpriced, considering that Bonded bourbon is cheaper including the minimum 4 year age requirement. Ya know that the corn is shucked before it goes in the bottle? Shuckin can get to be a habit for some folk. Can buy Geo. Dickel 12 for this price $3. cheaper - and will. Nothing personal.

US Spirit (2015-11-16):
My tasting notes on BT are similar to yours, but lack of age isn't the problem. BT is always at least 8 years old. Also, its labeled "Straight Bourbon Whiskey". Any Bourbon labeled "Straight Whiskey" that does NOT have an age statement must be at least 4 years old, the same as the minimum age for a BIB whiskey.

Cranecreek (2016-02-10):
Sorry US Spirit- but you are mistaken about "straight" Whiskey. The word "straight" can be used when the product is aged 2 years. The word "Bourbon" can be used as long as it is stored in new Oak barrels, with a mashbill of 51% corn. Bottled in Bond does guarentee the 4 years. My source for this explanation is "Code of Federal Regulations" as it applies to "Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits" Subpart C of the regulations for the ATF. The actual wording I have put in a comment under "Michters US1 Bourbon" or you can look it up online. (e-CFR) Title 27

Cranecreek (2016-02-10):
US Spirit- I see now where you were going with the 4 years age. If a bourbon is labeled "straight" and it is therefore over 2 years but less than 4 years than yes it would need an age statement revealing the age of the youngest whiskey/whiskies. There are "Bourbons" not labled as "straight". Therefore they do not need an age. Beacuse they don't need one.

Zenkensho Zenkensho (2) (2015-06-20)
This is an excellent whiskey. It tastes just like it should. Without getting too much into "nose" and "notes", it tastes like bourbon and reminds me of summertime, good times with friends and camping. This should be in your flask while fishing. If you can't appreciate this bourbon, you are not paying attention. It's a "go to", every day type whiskey and you can't go wrong with this bourbon. If you are looking for an affordable, balanced bourbon, this is it. Sure, there are better... but you'll pay more. If I can't find what I'm looking for or money IS an option (as it normally is) I walk out of the store with this.

For the price point, it doesn't get much better than Buffalo Trace. Smooth and with just the right amount of spices, this is easily my favorite Bourbon at the price point. If you can find, I'd recommend the Liter variety. You won't regret it.

Irishman (2015-03-22):
It doesn't get much better than Buffalo Trace at this price point for me, but I'm always looking for other great, cheaper bourbons. Can you give us any examples of bourbons that you think are better at this price point?

spezbaby (2015-03-22):
Personally, I enjoy 1792, Four Roses Small Batch and any of the more recent vintages of Evan Williams Single Barrel better than Buffalo Trace.

Irishman (2015-03-23):
I have all of those bottles in my bar. Everyone of them are more subtle and soft than BT. Now we know why you rated BT like you did! Everyone's palate enjoys various nuances. I usually like my bourbons to carry more spice, heavier oak, bit of char, and finish bold. But not always - there are times I want something a little more subtle like what you listed above.

Yankel W. (2015-09-11):
BT is about as something can get and yet be called bourbon. Course, I have to pay for what I drink. Course,, I may have gotten a "flubbed" bottle that they forgot to pour all that vanilla into. Bourbon is any whiskey made that fills the legal requirements. The rest of it is BS, propaganda and human taste, for which there is no accounting. BT is a ripoff.

Yankel W. (2015-09-11):
the missing word aboe is "mild".

Yankel W. (2015-09-11):
BT is so mild it could easily be forgotten. The nuance is missing.

Irishman (2015-09-19):
Each to his own, right? Knowing that everyone's palate is different and will enjoy or dislike different flavor profiles, I've seen good labels expand and/or cheapen their production and ruined a good thing (or bottled the original recipe under a new label and charged more for it). Tito's is my favorite example of a great thing gone wrong with an expansion. Jameson is a good example of cheapening a recipe and bottling the original under the Black label and charging $10 more for it. The first example is confirmed, the second I couldn't get the Big Liquor Rep to confirm or deny it. At any rate, BT has been one of my favorite, go-to bourbons for a few years. I really hope they didn't change the recipe or production to favor quantity over quality. I'll have to put it through a serious tasting after reading your notes.

Bought another bottle because a lot of other bourbon reviews mention it in comparison and I wanted to see if maybe I missed something the last time around. It has a very "sweet" nose; vanilla, dried fruits, and a hint of caramel. Has the same vanilla and caramel on the palate but has just a tiny little prickle of rye in there to keep it interesting. A hint of oak lingers on the finish. The one thing I'd change is increasing the rye in the mash bill, but for the price this truly is some great bourbon.

This is an excellent value in bourbon. It is good on ice, where is becomes very smooth and flavorful without becoming too watery and bland. Tremendous balance and depth of flavor without the burn.

I had been hearing about how great this bourbon is and called around to a few liquor stores before locating some. This bourbon is pretty cheap at only $29 in my area, but the flavor profile competes with top shelf in my opinion. The color is a very light amber almost like wine. I wasn't overly impressed with the aroma its sweet with a hint of spice. The mouth is very light and opens up with light sweetness followed by some spice. The finish was dry, but what didn't get this five stars is the fact that it was a bit bitter at the end. I completed a taste test between Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, and Willett Pot, and found that Buffalo Trace was on par. I still enjoy some of the more expensive bourbons a bit more, but for the price this stuff is fantastic.

Nose is caramel, smoke, lavender, fruit. Taste is so complex and so delicate that a specific list is impossible, but in general spicy, sweet, fruity, flowery, smoky, caramel, all evident but not excessive. Slight corn sweetness. Very smooth but with a charred oak bite. A fine, fine bourbon at the price, but I've moved on.

This is a WONDERFUL bourbon regardless of price point. I tend toward sweet flavored bourbons amd this fits the bill. Not too sweet and has a good kick. Id say this is like a maple syrup flavor, green applr, caramel, and a red hot candy. The red hot and apple comes on at the mid palate and the spice continues thru the long finish. My wife doesnt like this because she says she tastes black licorice. I, however dont taste it. It will be my dailyish drink at this price.

I'm updating this review. I've left the original review in quotations below. I've upped my rating on this one to 5 stars. Had this the other night on the rocks. My bottle has been opened for about 2 months now. I got this incredible "bubble gummy" sweetness (the soft pink Bubble Yum) that I either missed before, or that has come to the front after opening. This, Knob Creek and Maker's Mark are my three favorite bourbons. Ironically, I think they all have very different flavor profiles. Maybe it depends on my mood? As I said before, for the money, this is a must have........ "I rate this bourbon just below Maker's Mark. I have Maker's at a 4.5, I'll give this one a 4.0. I do not get as many of the classic bourbon notes in this one neat as I do in the Maker's Mark, but a splash of water or a little ice melt definitely brings all of those notes to the forefront. Vanilla, toffee, and caramel with a little burn and char. Mixing it with ginger ale definitely brought the char to the forefront. While I don't see this bourbon often in restaurants and bars, I've definitely found a new bourbon for the home bar, as it is a $6 cheaper than Maker's Mark and $10 cheaper than Knob Creek."

This is an excellent price/value point, but I was expecting something more based on the buzz that has been generated. It would be fine to buy at a low price for your liquor cabinet but it didn’t wow me. I’ll pay a little more for a marginally better Makers Mark.

Depends on your palate, Makers is considered a wheated bourbon where BT is not so the two carry very different flavor profiles. For the price, BT is hands down better than Maker's, but I don't like wheated bourbons.

Complex, subtle, smooth, and cheap! Not much to say that hasn't been said - a widely available and quite versatile bourbon that does just as well in an Old Fashioned as in vanilla pudding. Very good, and you'd usually have to spend a lot more to get something better. Though at this price point I would rather have Four Roses, personally.

Neat, nice body, subtle sweetness but it is earthy like beets and is too distracting. A little water makes the beetyness dissipate. I wanted to love it; I know it is a great product from a great distillery. I couldn’t really enjoy it neat. Not bad just not for me.

This is good stuff, and it earns it's rating. It's got some definite kick to it. It is very similar to it's big brother, Blanton's, except not quite as refined as the much more expensive Blanton's. Reminds me of a cinnamon flavor. I think you'd be very hard pressed to beat this, for the price

This is a great intro bourbon due to it's smoothness & price. It's a value bourbon great to share with friends new to the category. I'd put it in the same smoothiness catagory as 1792 & Blanton's. Tastewise I get a musty almost tea leave like quality that is a 'okay' for me. By far the most redeeming quality of this bourbon is how easy it is to drink... give this a pour & then look to expand your horizons :)

Nothing really special here. Better than a lot of mainstream bourbons, but I don't taste or find anything special with it. Fairly disappointed considering the hype behind this. A great mixer at best. Subpar straight up. Won't be purchasing again. P.S. I'm not a fan of anything American really. I've yet to find anything to hold a candle to even a $50 scotch.

Definitely my go to bourbon. I'm a big fan of basically everything they produce. I like the higher proof - 90 - and mix with a splash of cold water. I wish the whiskey was not chill filtered.

First bottle of Bourbon i tried.. Hated it at first.. But after about a year of working myself up to it i finally could appreciate the complexity and flavor.. Smooth and Flavorful bourbon that was great neat... Wasnt the best Whiskey in the house mixed because of the strong flavor and smoky-ness.. Great Bourbon, worth buying a bottle for the Bar!

In 2000 I visited the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Old school place with the gate guard going to work on a big cigar. Classic. I tried and puchaced a bottle of this stuff. Back then it was sporting Frankfurt County Bourbon of the Yearaward. When I got it back to seattle me and my best friend sat down and drank the whole damn thing. We both agreed that it was the best boubon ever. Now it is everywhere and I had it first! I knew it was gold. Drink it up players.

Sweet on the nose, but spicy on the palate. Smooth yet bold, this is a good, straight-ahead bourbon, and a fine value for the money. Buffalo Trace is a classic, a whiskey you can always turn to for a satisfying drink.

Don't really need to say anything that hasn't already said, but this is not only a good relatively cheap bourbon but one of the best around.  $22 where I live-a steal.

Smooth, round bourbon. Has all the notes I'm looking for. This bourbon fills the same role as Maker's Mark. They can be had reasonably and offer a premium (if not super-premium) product.

Opened the bottle and poured a dram.  First sip had a slight chemical smell.  Sat the glass down for a couple of minutes and had another sip.  Yummy, rich, complex.  Poured another w/ some water.  Still good but thinner.  Better neat.

Buffalo Trace is good but I cant believe anyone would honestly think its better than other non-premium bourbons like Makers, Pogue, Woodford, Elmer T Lee, etc. And dont even begin the comparison to premiums like Blantons.

Its the best. Dont contemplate. Buy a bottle and get Shelled. Theres no reason not to like this. Btw, Clint Shell still rules.

Nose is all fruit, but the palate is crisp and somewhat dry with smoke on the finish. This is basic bourbon, tasty straight, but not so expensive you'd mind mixing it.

The reviews were all great...Maybe I got a bad bottle. It tastes like moldy wood. I do like how it separates in your mouth, however I can't get past the moldy wood flavor. There are definitely a lot of better bourbons.

This bourbon is excellent on the rocks.  There are hints of cinnamon with other sweet spices, without being syrupy like some more popular brands.  It probably deserves 5 stars but I have yet to try it on the rocks.  Definitely worth a purchase.

This is now my favorite sub-$30 bourbon. A great range of complexity, with that bourbon bite. And if you add just a 1/4 teaspoon of water to a glass, it sings while accompanied by a smoothness I have gotten from few whiskies. I'm usually not one to go on about different flavor "notes", but you get a lot of things, such as powdered sugar, molasses, coffee, toffee, etc. BT is worth every penny, and maybe a few more than you will pay for it. Highly recommended stuff.

Best bourban out there for the money it just has this extra layer of flavor than your knob creek, makers mark, evan williams and others. Also smooth and has a great color. 5*****s

I am not a whiskey Drinker by any means so 3 stars is about as high as my ratings will be for whiskeys. Trace is very woody and that flavor carries forward when used in cocktails.

A very easy to drink, quality bourbon, mellow and rich at a great price. A wonderful rich bourbon that puts the other bourbons in its price range to shame. There are few others that are is good for the money and they make most of them.

I was first introduced to BT when my father started drinking it while I was visiting him in Louisville, KY. I still have yet to taste a bourbon that is better for the price. Great smokiness and not overly sweet.

This is, hands down, the best bourbon on the market for the money. You can drink this stuff without shame in front of anyone in any setting. and at $23 it soundly defeats much higher-priced stuff.
