Tier 1
This is a Tier 1 score in the Whiskey category. It means the spirit has won the highest recommendation at least once and probably many times.

Proof66 Notes

One doesn't often think of buffalo in Kentucky but the distillery takes its name from the buffalo path (or "trace") that led to the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County. Buffalo Trace Distillery takes pride in the limestone water (being notably free of iron) and good soil conditions for grain. The site has had a working distillery since 1787 but the official Buffalo Trace first began operation in 1857. It obtained one of only four permits offered during Prohibition to maintain production for "medicinal purposes." Today, the distillery sits on a picturesque 119 acres and produces several labels of bourbon.
Buffalo Trace was named Distillery of the Year by the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It was named a national historic landmark in 2013.

Buffalo Trace white dog is, simply enough, un-aged whiskey (or "new whiskey" or "moonshine" or "white lightning"). It was originally something of a rarity being produced only during the "white dog days" in the fall and often available in only 375ml bottles. This is enough, considering the extraordinary high proof of the spirit. It has lately been released in 750ml versions to be sold everywhere. The Mash #1 is the same grain bill used to make their signature Buffalo Trace Bourbon.

The 2011 Beverage Testing Institute review called the White Dog #1 "Big, and powerfully delicious."

I should think that 3/5 stars, indicating "drinkable" would be the ceiling for 'shine. A great addition to a whiskey shelf; the rye and barley greatly help out this spirit. There's just enough texture in the flavor that it avoids the sickly sweet scent and taste of the homemade products I've sampled. This bottle should have a home anywhere that Buffalo Trace is the house bourbon; at $15.99/ 375mL, why not?!?

A bit rough, glad the bottle is small.

Great novelty spirit! Very high proof. Not really a spirit that can be had straight. Overall, a little harsh and would be better suited to being bottled at a lower proof.
