Proof66 Notes

One doesn't often think of buffalo in Kentucky but the distillery takes its name from the buffalo path (or "trace") that led to the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County. Buffalo Trace Distillery takes pride in the limestone water (being notably free of iron) and good soil conditions for grain. The site has had a working distillery since 1787 but the official Buffalo Trace first began operation in 1857.

Definitely a better product than Ole Smoky Moonshine, but I was a little let down with this one. I was expecting at least a little resemblance to Buffalo Trace bourbon, but there really wasn't any. It's rough and jagged character is just enhanced by the high proof, so if I try it again I think it will be an order on the rocks. It's always interesting to try new things though. I would recommend Buffalo Trace fans to at least try a dram of this neat just to see the enormous change that spirit makes in the barrel.

I should think that 3/5 stars, indicating "drinkable" would be the ceiling for 'shine. A great addition to a whiskey shelf; the rye and barley greatly help out this spirit. There's just enough texture in the flavor that it avoids the sickly sweet scent and taste of the homemade products I've sampled. This bottle should have a home anywhere that Buffalo Trace is the house bourbon; at $15.99/ 375mL, why not?!?

Great novelty spirit! Very high proof. Not really a spirit that can be had straight. Overall, a little harsh and would be better suited to being bottled at a lower proof.
