Liquor Review Notes:
Bulleit Distilling Company came from the man Augustus Bulleit, who began as a tavern keeper in Louisville, Kentucky. His experiments in bourbon were lost in a trip to New Orleans not to be heard from again until 1987 when great-great grandson Tom Bulleit revived the family legacy. The brand is represented today by Hollis Bulleit, fourth in a line of four generations of management of the Bulleit bourbon brand. In 2010, the brand was acquired by Diageo but we were assured in talking with their representatives at the 2010 Celebration of American Distilling,  that their company was still small and family-run (if not family-owned) and a partnership with Diageo to provide some of the marketing muscle. While the brand is managed by the Bulleit Distilling Company the whiskey itself is sourced from Lawrenceburg Distillers in Indiana, which we note here as the producer.

First released on March 1, 2011, Bulleit 95 Rye whiskey is only the second product launched by popular distillery and complements their bourbon. The 95 in the title is in reference to the 95% rye in the grain bill (it must be at least 50% to qualify as a rye). The remaining 5% is malted barley.

Bulleit Rye was featured on a Mansome Libation episode instructing us in making an Old Fashioned cocktail with mixologist Tom Macy. It featured 2oz of Bulleit rye, a spoonful of sugar, and 2 dashes of each orange bitters and angostura bitters (we found the presentation noteworthy for the giant ice cube they used in the glass)--video here.

(4.5 out of 5). I was very impressed with this rye, especially for the price. Rye spice, pickles and oak on the nose. Taste is smooth with a spicy rye burn (not an alcohol burn) that is very chewy and long lasting. Finishes well. One of the best rye whiskeys around, and at only $25 in my area, what's not to love?

Really good rye. Only reason it's not 5 stars is because I take issue with the fact that the label says "Small Batch" when it's mass produced by LDI.

My opinion of this whiskey has a lot to do with a preference for certain styles, so take my rating with a grain of salt. This is a quality rye whiskey, being smooth with a unique spicy tinge to it. There is a good bit of char and wood in the flavor, which lends to the spiciness on the center of the tongue, and in the throat-filling finish. The nose is very heavily pickle, with char and oak as the supports, but I can see where others abstract notions of bread. The flavor is just a straight-ahead rye punch, which is somewhat the same effect Bulleit's bourbon had on me. This whiskey is a great value if you are a rye whiskey fan. I picked it up for $19 in my area, and there's a lot to love here. Rye may not be quite my cup of tea, but others may find this quite enjoyable.

Rye, rye, and more rye - with a spicy rye kick. If you are looking for an abundance of rye flavor, this is your whiskey.

If you want a ton of pure rye spice, this is your whisky. The initial jolt of concentrated rye is a bit off-putting at first, but in a minute or less I had found my favorite sip. The burn is all from the rye/cinammon/pepper spiciness, not from the alcohol, which disappears almost completely from the mix, even at 90 proof. An amazing grassy aftertaste that lasts forever. My only complaint is that I wish the nose matched the taste.

Available for about $20 in California, this is an excellent rye whiskey, and a great bargain. Unlike many rye whiskeys, which contain only 60% or 70% rye (and sometimes as little as 51%), Bulleit uses a whopping 95% rye grain (the rest is malted barley). This reminds me of High West's Rendezvous Rye--but for less than half the price.

Comments on Bulleit Bourbon were right on about having a lot of rye characteristics but if you wished it had more rye, here you go. My first thought when I opened the bottle and smelled it? Fresh rye bread. This is a wonderful rye to use in a Sazerac. Not everyone likes the dry style of Bulleit. If you prefer sweet bourbons like Makers Mark then neither Bulleit products will impress you. If you love rye whiskey then you must try this one.

Bulleit Rye pours a light amber color indicative of a much younger whiskey. It has aromas of dry spice, some cherry, tobacco, and a kind of yeasty ester that I cant quite place. The taste is superb. Very crisp taste with a punch of peppery spiciness. The muted smokiness that is present in Bulleits bourbon is absent here, which is a little disappointing as it is something that I was expecting. A little caramelized toffee with some vanilla and oak flavors. The finish is long, with no sweetness whatsoever.

A really great whiskey. Smooth with a spicy kick.
