Proof66 Notes

First released on March 1, 2011, Bulleit 95 Rye whiskey is only the second product launched by popular distillery and complements their bourbon. The 95 in the title is in reference to the 95% rye in the grain bill (it must be at least 50% to qualify as a rye). The remaining 5% is malted barley.

Bulleit Rye was featured on a Mansome Libation episode instructing us in making an Old Fashioned cocktail with mixologist Tom Macy. It featured 2oz of Bulleit rye, a spoonful of sugar, and 2 dashes of each orange bitters and angostura bitters (we found the presentation noteworthy for the giant ice cube they used in the glass)--video here.

Bulleit Distilling Company came from the man Augustus Bulleit, who began as a tavern keeper in Louisville, Kentucky. His experiments in bourbon were lost in a trip to New Orleans not to be heard from again until 1987 when great-great grandson Tom Bulleit revived the family legacy. The brand is represented today by Hollis Bulleit, fourth in a line of four generations of management of the Bulleit bourbon brand. In 2010, the brand was acquired by Diageo but we were assured in talking with their representatives at the 2010 Celebration of American Distilling,  that their company was still small and family-run (if not family-owned) and a partnership with Diageo to provide some of the marketing muscle. The whiskey was originally sourced from Lawrenceburg Distillers in Indiana (later MGP and now Proximo Distillers), but in 2012 production moved to the Diageo bottling plant in Connecticut, then to their plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and now in 2016 to Plainsfield, Illinois. At this point, one has to assume it is a blend from several different locations. We continue to note Proximo simply on the assumption that much of the spirit originates there. For those interested in the origins of whiskey, a new distillery and warehouse complex in Shelby County, Kentucky that will be the Bulleit Distillery is scheduled to open some time in 2016. (Of course, aging it will take longer.)

Bulleit rye is decent rye whisky but overpriced.Redemption rye is from same factory and id little better for less money Also George Dickel rye is cheaper than Bulleit and from same factory and company.Nose is oak, rye, and vanilla. Entry is prickly with oak, pipe tobacco, vanilla, ending with mint, spice, and vanilla finish.

A little off topic to start, but I love the shape of the bottles in this particular line of whiskeys. It really helped draw me towards the brand, because I’ll tell you one thing is for sure, the weak, pale amber coloring didn’t do the whiskey any favors. Fortunately, the smell of alcohol, grain, and oak made up for the look of it right away. After a couple drinks of this fine whiskey, I settled into a consistent combination of fruitiness that later turns into grain, and finishes with a nice long burn. While a confusing drink at first, it never left me disappointed. Check out my full review at exploreblog.net.

Good but would pick Sazerac or High West or Whistle Pig before it.

Bulleit was my first rye whiskey, and for a while it put me off of ryes altogether. At the time my 2 choices were between this and Rittenhouse, and the guy at the store recommended this (probably because it has a 95-5 rye-barley mash, while Rittenhouse is a "barely legal" 51% rye whiskey). My issue with Bulleit Rye is basically the same as with the bourbon (only moreso): it's dry as a bone. It's a strange thing for me to complain about a complex, flavorful whiskey with very little alcohol burn, but Bulleit Rye manages to be all those things and yet is also something I can't enjoy. The tasting notes I get are rye, caraway (that's probably my imagination but its always there), sour pickel brine, coriander, a bit of wood (with no char), and mint. The overall effect for me is kind of like sipping pickle juice or maybe the salted water that's had the spice packet from a corned beef floating in it for a few hours. Neither of those 2 tastes are objectionable per say, but few people would ever sit down and pour themselves a dram of pickle juice to drink, and I'm not one of them. This isn't quite a mellow spirit either, although it has almost no alcohol burn, it does have some rye fire (which is not quite the same thing). Since my bottle is 3 year old now, I've tried it as a mixer in almost every kind of cocktail I can thing of (and have also tried water, ice, and even keeping the bottle in the freezer), but nothing really works. As a mixer its like if you got a soda from one of those new touchscreen Coke fountains and along with an option for Cherry, Lemon, and Vanilla you could also get a salt and vinegar coke. It does make a drinkable Manhattan though (ironically, my best effort paired it with awful cheap Gallo vermouth), but even then its actually too dry for my taste. This is basically a 1 star experience for me as its undrinkable after the first or maybe second sip, but objectively its not a badly made spirit. If you like Bulliet bourbon and consider that sweet, but are looking for something more complex, by all means try this. And if you're trying to get into rye in general, this isn't a bad place to start... in a bar. You might like it a lot, but there's some chance you'll dislike it. If that's the case, don't be put off of rye in general as the other's I've tried are sweeter than this. 2 out of 5 stars for me.

When I'm not really in the mood for bourbon or scotch, this is what I reach for. A very nice "in-between". Very fresh nose and entry on the palate with a long, dry savory finish. Great sipper neat with a drop of water.

This provides an excellent choice that is robust, flavorful, yet smooth enough to drink neat. This rye draws me in every time with an excellent aroma. One of my favorites.

This is first Rye Whiskey i've tried and i thought it would taste similar to bourbon.... boy i was dead wrong. Has nose of oak, vanilla, light fruit like pears with the nose what others have noted... a pickle! You can taste more oak along with fruitiness with slighty peppery, fruity and big spicy finish. If you haven't tried a rye whiskey already please definetly try this! You won't regret it.

Ahhhh light body, spicy, nice vanilla finish....the high rye content in combination with a good maturation makes this the smoothest spirit i have ever tasted. highly recommended.

I pick this one up in Sam's Club once in awhile for $21.99. In my opinion, this is a very solid Rye for any day sipping. Smooth, flavorful and does not give me terrible headaches like some others.

Definitely smells of pickles, and sips real smooth and spicy. Rye isn't my thing but I'm glad it tried it once. From everyone I've talked to, this is the go-to budget rye (and competes with more expensive offerings easily).

LOVE this stuff!! Cinnamon, vanilla & oak on the nose. Nice rye spice with just the right amount of burn. I know it's an overused term, but this stuff is "smooth" with just the right amount of kick to remind you that you're drinking rye. Great neat or on the rocks. The best Old Fashioned and Manhattan that I've ever made. Expensive, but worth a spot in your home bar. In my opinion, a solid notch above Templeton for a couple bucks less.

Not being a regular rye drinker I find this whiskey smooth and very clean. Mellow pepper with good vanilla tones. Slow mellow warmth to the tail with light heat. Mellows out over rocks with more oak flavors coming forth, going to be trying this again.

Never would have guessed that I would enjoy a whiskey that so many various reviews include the words "hint of pickle", but this stuff is really great. I can't find a single thing to criticize. Very good value.

4.25/5; Phenominal. This might be my favorite value whisky. It's certainly not the best I've had but it's one of those whisky's that if you really chew it and explore the rye flavors you'll find there is a lot to love! The best part by far is the price. I can think of no other whisky in the low $20 range that I could spend some quality time with chewing on that really holds my attention. (fyi I don't even like rye bread!). If you see it, buy it, sip neat, & repeat

I really just bought it for the cool glass bottle. Awesome spiciness, full of flavor, loved it. Found it for $26 at Costco though it is a tough sell with other good Bourbons and Ryes under $20. I don’t like stretching too far over $25 but I will get it again for the flavor but also for the rustic glass décor for the mancave.

Very full flavor. Just like good, old world homemade rye bread. You can almost chew this whiskey. At its price point, it is a steal.

Bulleit hit the nail on the head with this one. Excellent craftsmanship and a full flavor that holds its own right up the the last sip. If you like a good whiskey sour, try it with this, or half-and-half with Bulleit bourbon. It adds a new dimension to a classic without making it taste "contemporary".

(4 out of 5). I was very impressed with this rye, especially for the price. Rye spice, pickles and oak on the nose. Taste is smooth with a spicy rye burn (not an alcohol burn) that is very chewy and long lasting. Finishes well. One of the best rye whiskeys around, and at only $25 in my area, what's not to love?

Bulleit really delivers the goods with this one, a true, not corned-down rye. Drinks neat very well, with a pleasant finish. A great value for the price.

Really good rye. Only reason it's not 5 stars is because I take issue with the fact that the label says "Small Batch" when it's mass produced by LDI.

My opinion of this whiskey has a lot to do with a preference for certain styles, so take my rating with a grain of salt. This is a quality rye whiskey, being smooth with a unique spicy tinge to it. There is a good bit of char and wood in the flavor, which lends to the spiciness on the center of the tongue, and in the throat-filling finish. The nose is very heavily pickle, with char and oak as the supports, but I can see where others abstract notions of bread. The flavor is just a straight-ahead rye punch, which is somewhat the same effect Bulleit's bourbon had on me. This whiskey is a great value if you are a rye whiskey fan. I picked it up for $19 in my area, and there's a lot to love here. Rye may not be quite my cup of tea, but others may find this quite enjoyable.

Rye, rye, and more rye - with a spicy rye kick. If you are looking for an abundance of rye flavor, this is your whiskey.

If you want a ton of pure rye spice, this is your whisky. The initial jolt of concentrated rye is a bit off-putting at first, but in a minute or less I had found my favorite sip. The burn is all from the rye/cinammon/pepper spiciness, not from the alcohol, which disappears almost completely from the mix, even at 90 proof. An amazing grassy aftertaste that lasts forever. My only complaint is that I wish the nose matched the taste.

Available for about $20 in California, this is an excellent rye whiskey, and a great bargain. Unlike many rye whiskeys, which contain only 60% or 70% rye (and sometimes as little as 51%), Bulleit uses a whopping 95% rye grain (the rest is malted barley). This reminds me of High West's Rendezvous Rye--but for less than half the price.

Comments on Bulleit Bourbon were right on about having a lot of rye characteristics but if you wished it had more rye, here you go. My first thought when I opened the bottle and smelled it? Fresh rye bread. This is a wonderful rye to use in a Sazerac. Not everyone likes the dry style of Bulleit. If you prefer sweet bourbons like Makers Mark then neither Bulleit products will impress you. If you love rye whiskey then you must try this one.

Bulleit Rye pours a light amber color indicative of a much younger whiskey. It has aromas of dry spice, some cherry, tobacco, and a kind of yeasty ester that I cant quite place. The taste is superb. Very crisp taste with a punch of peppery spiciness. The muted smokiness that is present in Bulleits bourbon is absent here, which is a little disappointing as it is something that I was expecting. A little caramelized toffee with some vanilla and oak flavors. The finish is long, with no sweetness whatsoever.
