Proof66 Notes

Bushmills Original whiskey is a blended whiskey and sits in virtually every bar in the world. It is "the cornerstone" of the Bushmills family of whiskeys.

Bushmills whiskey is made at the Old Bushmills Distillery, the oldest operating distillery in Ireland. It marks its founding in 1608 when King James granted Sir Thomas Phillips the right to distill whiskey. It became registered in 1784. Today, it continues to produce only single malt (barley) whiskey and when it blends uses grain whiskey from other distilleries. They distill in a combination of 9, swan-neck stills that they believe produces a "lighter, smoother" style of whiskey. The brand and distillery were both acquired by international conglomerate Diageo in 2006 who later traded it to Jose Cuervo in March, 2015 in exchange for the Don Julio brand.

This is a fairly light bodied whiskey. Not as flavorful as I would like. Not as sweet as Jameson either. But quite good nonetheless. Decently priced. Black Bush is a worthwhile upgrade for anything but mixed drinks.

This is another entry level Irish whiskey, and as such, I don't think its all that great. For about the same price (or mabye a buck or two less) it is a good alternative to Jameson's. Still not very interesting, but smoother (for some reason I find Jameson's quite harsh, and its not because I'm not used to drinking whiskey neat), and there's a little less "yuck" from the neutral grain spirits they use to float this than with Jameson's. But its still not good, and the $25-$30 this costs will buy actual good stuff. Plus if you really like this, Black Bush is a big improvement for not much more money. If you love Irish whiskey and don't have much money, maybe its worth a try, otherwise but if you can possibly afford it, Black Bush is a huge step up, and the 10 year old (which has no neutral grain spirits) is better still. Also if you like to toast St Patrick's Day with Irish Whiskey, know that some consider using Bushmill's a faux pas since the distillery is actually in Northern Ireland. But then again, if I drink whiskey at all on St Patrick's day its usually American so who am I to talk? 2.5 stars but I refuse to round it up.

A bit harsh to me, slightly fruity but metallic taste off of it.

This is a good whisky. It is fruity on nose, and obviously tasty. However, it is "weak" in comparison to Black Bush, in terms of flavor and delight of nose. I would place it overall at providing 50% of what Black Bush provides. Black Bush is significantly higher in its percentage of SM blended into the bottle. So, and this is obviously subjective, good but if you can afford it, Black Bush is more the delight. At this price point (Bushmills Original) I buy US Bourbon.

Nice entry to Bushmills family. Take this one when you want to polish a bottle in the evening with your friends. It's drinkable, but not very impressive. For a few bucks more get Black Bush and enjoy the finest Irish blend. For the price its an excellent whiskey. 3***

Picked up a bottle the other day since I always like to toast St Patrick with an Irish beverage. Up until last year, it was always a pint of Irish ale. Last year I toasted with a 50ml bottle of Jameson that was free with my wife's tequila purchase. Decided I'd try the Bushmills this year (I know little about Irish Whiskey but I liked Bushmill's bottle design better than Jameson's) . Pleasant nose. Enters the palate with a light malty sweetness. Toasted grain with light smoke. A bit thin and underaged in my opinion which leaves the mid-palate weak. This reminds me of Troy & Sons Oak Reserve, but without as much bite and character. I don't see me sipping this one often, but the good news is this bottle should last me several St. Patrick's days. 3 Stars...

Fine. Not great but better than Tullamore DEW or other comparables.

2.5... the burn is harsher than Jameson. It has some sweetness and some spice to it.

I didn't enjoy this at all. If there was nothing else available, I could drink it. The initial taste was okay but the aftertaste was horrible.

Irish whiskies are great for budding enthusiasts to start with primarily due to their lighter flavor. Bushmills is no exception, and the payoff is a distinct sweetness that makes it a great starter of a sipping whisky. Its also inexpensive, so go for it!

I trepidatiously approached this whiskey as I was a little skeptical of how good a $19 bottle of Irish Whiskey could be. My risk-taking paid off huge dividends. This is a very fine, sipping whiskey with a smooth, light taste and no bitter after taste one usually finds with blended whiskeys. I highly recommend it for both price and quality.

Smell is a little like new shoe leather. The taste is slightly nutty and finishes like the tingly sensation you get from licking a 9-volt battery. It is however warm and the way down.

Not as smooth as the comparable Jameson's $20 bottle but still good none-the-less.
