Proof66 Notes

Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye Whiskey is one of the signature rye spirits from the Virginia microdistillery. The 100% organic rye spirit is aged in Minnesota White Oak--smaller barrels that include an immersion of "spirals" (shavings or shards of oak) to accelerate the aging process and add a certain robustness to the flavor.

The name "Roundstone" is meant to be a tribute to small town in Ireland where Catoctin Creek founders Scott and Becky Harris stayed for a time. They were so taken with the town's hospitality that they repaid them with the highest honor they could think of: the name for their rye whiskey.

Roundstone Rye was awarded the Gold Seal at the 2013 Good Food Awards, which recognizes food and spirits that are "exceptionally delicious," practice "sustainability," and support "social good."

Roundstone Rye received a Silver Medal in the American Distilling institute 2011 whiskey competition and was "best in category" for aged rye whiskey.

In their 2011 review, the Beverage Testing Institute called Roundstone Rye "Wild and wooly, but entertaining."

Roundstone Rye was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2010 New York International Spirits Competition.

Catoctin Creek Distillery was founded in 2009 by Scott and Becky Harris on principles of purity of ingredients, including 100% organic certification, which was obtained in May, 2010. The name comes from the Native American kittoctin translated as "place of many deer" and which lends its name to a local creek, which runs east to the Chesapeake Bay. Becky Harris has a background in chemical engineering and runs matters pertaining to their German-made copper column still. Scott Harris's first career was in information technology. In 2011, they were given a "Silver Certified" and given the Innovation Award by the 2011 Green Business Challenge. In 2012, they expanded to a new 300 gallon Kothe still and moved to a largre building in Purcellville, Virginia. This is a distillery we have visited personally! Virginia is for lovers and this is a lovely little dram. Soft fruit, think banana, on the nose. This is a nice, light whisky. Caramel, banana again on the tongue.
