Proof66 Notes

"Clyenlish" is Gaelic for "slope of the garden." The Clynelish distillery shares a heritage with the now "silent" Brora distillery. According to Whiskey Distilleries Info the Brora was known as Clynelish until its closing in 1983. The new Clynelish was constructed directly across the street from the old and took its name. (They also claim it's an exact replica of Caol Ila.) The older building is now used as a warehouse for the new. A mere 1% of the production is offered as a single malt with the rest going to Johnnie Walker Gold Label blended scotch.

This is the highly regarded Clynelish 14yr scotch... considered to be a "great introductory scotch."

Known for its waxiness, Clynelish 14 is a Highland Single Malt primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks. Scotch mist gives an indication that it is non-chill filtered. Creamy honey, candle wax and lemon juice are prominent on the nose, while rich floral notes with a hint of peppermint lurk in the background. The arrival is warming and aromatic, unfolding a distinctly dry and oily character. Oak bitterness with a touch of salt dominates the medium length finish. Altogether, it is an engaging and intense malt that requires time and is not suitable as everyday dram. RATING: 3.9/5.0 ≙ 87 pts

$72 in my area. Prominent citrus nose, I get lemon and dried oranges. This one takes to letting sit for a few minutes, let it open up, even a small amount of water is acceptable. The nice slightly waxy mouth feel and fruit become more up front. 92 proof is a plus. Not only is Clynelish featured in Johnnie Walker Gold but independent blender Compass Box uses it generously in many of their offerings ( I.e. 20 year in Flaming Heart). 4.2/5.0

4.15/5, waxy yes, mineral yes, flinty metallic edge yes, and very salty. Classic highland honey flavors and floral notes linger. The mineral flinty part may not be for everyone but it is quite unique and quite good. Supposedly the heart blend for gold label. I could see my self buying a bottle, quite complex actually

Highland whisky which have completely own waxy style. It has seashore aromas (no peat thing), honey and mustardy taste. Smooth and balanced, but waxy taste is little weird... One point for 46% ABV, maybe five stars if un-chill filtered & non-coloured. Maybe... Taste yourself!

As far as I know, the 'waxiness' of Clynelish is distillery-specific, rather than being a general feature of all Highland Single Malts. Although it is not stated on the lable, I think this malt is either non-chill filtered or only very moderatly filtered, as Scotch mist appears when water is added.
