Proof66 Notes

Colonel EH Taylor Small Batch bourbon is the first of the line of Taylor whiskeys. Sour mash usually refers to preserving yeast from the prior fermentation to use in the next; the marketing site suggests that their mash is "soured" for "days prior to distillation" through a patented technique. Whatever the case, they say the bourbon has a character unlike others on the market. The bourbon is aged for 9 years and offered at a relatively stiff 100 proof.

Doing the colonel proud, the 2012 Beverage Testing Institute called this bourbon "very masculine."

Colonel EH Taylor bourbon is named for Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr who had a particular method for sour mash bourbon. It is a line of bourbons originating from the Buffalo Trace Distillery and owned by Sazerac.

One doesn't often think of buffalo in Kentucky but the distillery takes its name from the buffalo path (or "trace") that led to the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County. Buffalo Trace Distillery takes pride in the limestone water (being notably free of iron) and good soil conditions for grain. The site has had a working distillery since 1787 but the official Buffalo Trace first began operation in 1857. It obtained one of only four permits offered during Prohibition to maintain production for "medicinal purposes." Today, the distillery sits on a picturesque 119 acres and produces several labels of bourbon. Buffalo Trace was named Distillery of the Year by the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It was named a national historic landmark in 2013.

Excellent Bottle. Hard to find. More spice than sweet. I finished. I would buy and drink anytime.

This bourbon has a lot going for it. It is "bottled in bond" which right away gives you some guarantees. Made by only one distiller with a Master Distiller in charge. It's got to be 100 proof and "straight". This E. H. Taylor has a beautiful Mahogany color and a great nose. I refer to these rich complex bourbons as "Fireplace Bourbons" A bourbon to be sipped and savored at length. A just right mouth feel with tastes of Gingerbread-heavy cream-rum soaked fruitcake-freshly waxed leather and a hint of spicy cigar box. And this whiskey delivers all of that without seeming sweet. Superb balance of flavors and aromas. If my limit was $40 and my goal was to buy the best bourbon I could at that price then this Colonel E. H. Taylor "Small Batch" would be my choice without hesitation.

Excellent bourbon. It's right in there with Knob Creek, Evan Williams SB Vintage, and Willett Pot Still Reserve. More rich and sweet with the spiciness rather than dry and subtle. If you like a full flavored bourbon that you can almost chew than this is your bottle. Now I'm going to have to pony up some more nickels so I can try some of the Colonel's pricier offerings.

4.5, buy it if you can find it. Awesome classic spicy bourbon body similar to Willet but elevated and the finish gears down gently... It's epic and in a special class of bourbon.
