Proof66 Notes

The Warehouse C Tornado Surviving bourbon is a very special and limited edition. As explained in a fine write-up at the Whiskey Reviewer, where the describe how the tornado of 2006 struck the warehouse at the Buffalo Trace Distillery destroying the building but sparing the bourbon. The whiskey received the full force of the summer heat as the warehouses were rebuilt around the barrels. The special aging--and are reported doubling of the evaporation rate ("angel's share") created a truly unique limited edition with a fine story behind it.

Colonel EH Taylor bourbon is named for Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr who had a particular method for sour mash bourbon. It is a line of bourbons originating from the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Colonel EH Taylor Sour Mash bourbon is the first of the line of Taylor whiskeys. Sour mash usually refers to preserving yeast from the prior fermentation to use in the next; the marketing site suggests that their mash is "soured" for "days prior to distillation" through a patented technique. Whatever the case, they say the bourbon has a character unlike others on the market. The bourbon is aged for 9 years and offered at a relatively stiff 100 proof.

The Tornado is spicey and tastes of dried fruits, vanilla and pepper. The flavor is mostly up front and then tapers off. It was a one time bottling and not available any more. It has a really interesting story; read up on it. Im glad I bought a couple of extra bottles because its one of my all time favorites.

This bottle is worth having just to tell the story to your friends. Because of the extreme aging process this is a very flavorful bourbon with a long finish that continues to evolve and develop for ever it seems. I enjoy it with just a touch of water but have found it makes an excellent old fashioned. Hard to find but grab it if you can cause there won't be anymore.
