Proof66 Notes

Compass Box blended scotches are a new range meant to both nurture and evolve the traditions of scotch and provide a "re-birth" to the respect of blended scotch.

Spice Tree blended scotch is a blend of Highland scotch whisky with a primary emphasis on the Clynelish Distillery. It is aged primarily in a combination of first-fill and re-fill American oak, traditionally promising vanilla and caramel flavors. There is a second maturation process using French oak heads with varying levels of "toast" (char) to create "additional layers of complexity." They suggest for after-dinner sipping with cheese.

This scotch was banned by the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) due to the use of French Oak staves during the aging process. From the Compass Box website: "The issue revolved around the SWA's interpretation of the laws regarding traditional practice in the production of spirits in European Union countries. While we disagreed with their interpretation of the law, we did, nonetheless, decide to stop production of "The Spice Tree" while we continue to seek a sensible outcome." update: Compass Box was able to develop a new maturation process and resume production with what they regard as yielding "similar if not superior results."

French oak finishes are really hit or miss with me. Sometimes they're a home run, and sometimes they're a flop. In every case where they flop they end up too astringent. I love the nose on this whisky, just like many other French oak finished whiskeys (Glenlivet 15), but the palate and the finish are distractingly (is that a word?!) astringent.
