Proof66 Notes

Wasmund's Copper Fox Rye Whisky (note the Scottish style of spelling "whisky" without the "e" despite rye being a distinctly American spirit) is their "latest way of shaking up the whisky world." The mash bill contains at least 50% rye plus "an extraordinarily generous amount of our smoked malt (2/3 rye and 1/3 barley). As the whiskey, the barley is smoked with a blend of apple and cherry wood.

Copper Fox was founded in 2000 by In Sprerryville, Virginia by Rick Wasmund on his return from Scotland and an internship with the Bowmore Distillery.

I part company with my fellow Irishman on this one. If, like me, you are not a fan of peated scotch, you likely are not going to like this one. If you managed to find a bottle of JJ Neukomm and didn't care for it, you probably won't care for this either. The nose is full of foreboding, overpowering with tobacco and leather, mainly tobacco. It immediately alerts on that nothing good can come of proceeding further. Unfortunately, I failed to heed this clear signal. Leather, on the other hand, perfectly describes the taste. It certainly bears no resemblance to Rye. Not digging this one, which is particularly disappointing as I somehow acquired two bottles of the stuff.

This is a unique rye whiskey that I love because of the incredible subtleties in the flavor profile. Rye, oak, touch of fruitiness... all balanced perfectly. As stated in the reviews here, it really does open up with an ice cube or two. And at around $45, this is a very approachable and special rye whiskey to add to your bar.

This rye signals a new chapter of rye whisky making with the use of hand malted, smoked malt, the double wood treatment, and the use of apple and cherry woods in both smoking and aging. These are bold steps at not just reviving a whisky category but also an attempt to capture new population of rye drinkers along with creating a new style of rye. The apple and cheery wood treatments give you a lot of wood while adding fruit to the mix resulting in a slightly fruity, woody, and eminently drinkable rye that will be a great addition to any mixologists' (professional or amateur) back bar or liquor cabinet. Singular, a touch exotic, and lovely- just the way we like them.
