Proof66 Notes

Crown Royal Black Canadian whisky is a blend of whiskies that comes in a higher (90) proof and darker, fuller body than their flagship 10yr Deluxe expression. Generally, the notion of a "black" whisky indicates an aging in a heavier char barrel, suggesting more oak-driven flavors of caramel/vanilla with the char finish. On their website, they call out its boldness and go so far as to warn the would-be imbiber to "brace yourself!"

In a review at The Luxist, they called it a $40 whisky selling for $30.

Crown Royal was first produced to in 1939 by Seagram's (then a Canadian company but now defunct with the label owned by Pernod-Ricard) to honor the Canadian tour by British royals King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Crown is probably the most widely known and certainly one of the more widely available Canadian Whisky on the market. Currently, it's the top-selling Canadian whisky in the United States; the brand itself is owned by the Big Liquor Conglomerate Diageo. The distillery itself is, of course, located in Canada. Some may recall a narrowly averted labor strike in 2007 that would--heaven forfend!--have interrupted whisky production. One time produced in Ontario but moved production to Manitoba in 1992.

If I were to blend some whiskeys and add a little something to create a "Bourbon" what Bourbon would I use as a model ? Nothing too daunting but have unmistakable flavors and character. Elijah Craig 12 step up to the bar! I poured an ounce of each and blind tasted neat. First off the nose was identical-secondly I missed 50% of the time on picking which was which. Now with a small ice cube the Crown Royal faded rapidly only keeping it's dark color and Caramel taste. (did you know that Canadian produced whiskey can have up to 9% added flavors, coloring, etc. unlike American Straight Bourbon which can only have water added.) End result is that Crown Royal Black is a very good re-creation of E.C. 12. And for about $5 less you could buy the Elijah Craig 12 !

I gotta say, I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this whisky. Very drinkable, not at all bland, yet still complex enough to appreciate. I couldn't quite give it a "5", but still great stuff - somewhere between. 4.5 & 4.75. Nose has strong vanilla and dark milk chocolate. My palate picks up chocolate covered raisins, Dr. Pepper, and Cherry Coke. Nice, sweet finish with sweet corn, toasted oak, caramel, and more vanilla. Kudos to Crown Royal for upping the the ABV from its usual 40% to 45%. Enjoyed this neat, but also made an excellent Manhattan! At $30, I don't think you can go wrong!

I've posted elsewhere my love of regular Crown and Crown Rye so I'm prejudiced. Usually I drink the other Crown products with a splash of water or club soda. This deserves to be drunk straight up with an ice cube or two. Wonderful stuff with sweet balanced flavor

This is has more character than original Crown Royal and is much more robust and bold on the palate, something Canadian Whiskies are missing in general. Kinda sips like a light bourbon.

I like this version of Crown better than the original and has a higher strength, and there’s definitely more flavor here than the standard Crown Royal or Crown Royal Reserve and I drink this on the rocks, because it is pretty smooth.

I've been generally unimpressed by Canadian Whiskies. At the suggestion of another reviewer on this site, I decided to give this one a try. First impression? Love the color on this one. Dark, robust, almost coffee-like. Pleasant nose. Definite caramel with a smoky note as well. Neat, it Enters the palate with a sweetness that stays throughout. Bold oak and char definitely present. Pleasant burn on the finish. I usually find Canadian whisky "thin" with very little complexity. While this is not as complex as a good bourbon, it is very enjoyable and offers a great "heavy" mouth feel with several discernible characteristics. Way ahead of Crown's standard offering. Thanks for the recommendation, Muncher. I definitely see a bottle of this in my future.

Muncher (2014-12-22):
Glad you liked it! Next on my list to try is the Tin Cup American Whiskey. Saw it at the store and didn't consider it until I read your review of it.

There's only a few Canadians that I like(so far), and this is one of them. Great color. A very robust, full flavor profile. Lots of oak and char up front with a little sweetness constantly hovering in the background. Definitely strong, but not harsh. I'm perplexed as to why this has such a low rating. Unless I really nitpick it I really can't find anything to criticize. My new favorite Canadian.

I wouldn't say this is "bad", just not for me. Admittedly, I'm more of a bourbon drinker, but i prefer regular Crown or Crown Maple. It's very smooth in all phases, but the aftertaste reminds me of a coffee taste. I don't know if that's where the "black" comes from. I'm definitely not a coffee drinker. I wouldn't buy this again.

I enjoy the standard Crown Royal but this is much better. Just as smooth and a little more sweet. Very good!

I was able to taste this one regularly for a while, as my brother had been gifted a bottle.  I prefer it to the standard expression, though I rarely drink Canadian whiskies.  I admit to being a Jack Daniel's fan, so perhaps that explains it; I like some char.

For some reason not quite as enjoyable on its own as the standard Crown Royal. Try it in a Manhattan.

I tried a sampler of this and will probably buy a bottle of it at some point soon. It was very tasty, and had a sweetness that the regular CR doesn . It goes down pretty smooth, but not spectacularly. What got me was the taste, which to me sells this whisky once you try it. I say skip the regular CR and go straight for this.

Awesome color. Strong nose. A stronger, more woods-ey flavor than regular Crown Royal. I did not like it on the rocks, but it made a great Old Fashioned. And... comes with a cool black bag (as opposed to purple)!

This was a nice whisky to try. Crown Royal is, in general, an approachable whisky. Very smooth... smooth to the point of boring, really.

Well, Black isn't boring; it has a heavy, heavy char. To me, it tastes like Jack Daniels only a bit smoother with all the bite. Probably would greatly appeal to Jack Daniels drinkers.
