Rating Description

Tier 2
This is a Tier 2 score in the Whiskey category. It means critics have highly recommended the spirit as a benchmark in the category.

Notes

Crown Royal was first produced to in 1939 by Seagram's (then a Canadian company but now defunct with the label owned by Pernod-Ricard) to honor the Canadian tour by British royals King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Crown is probably the mose widely known and certainly one of the more widely available Canadian Whisky on the market. Currently, it's the top-selling Canadian whisky in the United States; the brand itself is owned by the Big Liquor Conglomerate Diageo. The distillery itself is, of course, located in Canada. Some may recall a narrowly averted labor strike in 2007 that would--heaven forfend!--have interrupted whisky production. One time produced in Ontario but moved production to Manitoba in 1992.

This is their flagship whisky that is also known as Crown Royal DeLuxe and is mixed mercilessly everywhere in the US in coke. Despite being blended, it's considered a 10yr whisky (meaning that all whiskies are no younger than 10 years).

Drink Hacker gave this whisky a nice 7.5 out of 10 score saying, "Crown Royal is pretty good stuff, and most drinkers tend to like it. So if you have a few extra bucks and are in the mood for a good whiskey, why not invest it in a bottle of Crown Royal?" Not exactly a ringing endorsement--especially for Proof66 readers who know that Elitism Rules--but still nice.

inoffensive and middle of the road, which makes it good to have on hand, as nearly everyone will find it an acceptable choice.

Don't really know how anyone could give this a bad review. It is a classic, even if its not the world's greatest. Has a nice sweetness on the tongue and palate. No burn going down. Unfortunately, not much taste at all going down. I can see why its such a popular mixer (crown and coke). But don't mix with water! A splash of water kills the taste entirely.

3.5 stars. It's pretty darn smooth, but not an abundance of character. It's much better than Canadian Club, but also more expensive.

(2.5 out of 5). Perhaps this isn't the greatest analogy, but I like to think of this as the PatrĂ³n of Canadian Whiskey. Although it's quite smooth, it's substanceless- well-presented mediocrity. I'll admit I've never found a Canadian Whiskey I've fallen in love with, but Forty Creek single barrel is better and cheaper. Price in my area varies, but it's always too much!

Everyone knows crown, the mediocre whisky that is capable of beating some of the other bottomshelf whisky & is advertised as something special... for me if you need a bottle for a party or something for your flask it's 'okay' but there really aren't any redeeming qualities here other than the mild relative smoothness to other bottom shelf bottles

People love to rip this stuff. I agree - the bags are dumb. Get rid of the, and reduce the price by a quarter. Why do they sell so much of this stuff? Because its pretty good

YUP ITS THE BOTTLE!!! Thats what got me to buy this 1 star product. It just goes to show sometimes all you need is a great presentation and great advertising to be successful. But real whiskey drinkers know this is the bottom of the barrel.

Nothing beats the smoothness of Crown... except Crown... Love this as any mixer and even nice as a neat on the rocks.. Love the price on this, can easily find a 1.75L for under 40$.. Great Deal for the smoothness and flavor you only find in Crown Royal "Deluxe"

Not much of a whiskey drinker, but my friend brought it over while we were hanging out and I had some mixed with coke, and some neat and on the rocks. It is smooth, but the flavor is rather odd.  it is sort of bitter, and I had a hard time having more than one glass.

Great in mixed drinks (classic Highball), drinkable on the rocks or neat.

Makes me think of.....How well people will blindly follow advertising. Harsh with a flavor and nose that reminds me of the bad old days of buying rot gut liquor as a kid because it was cheap. There is a reason no one drinks this without mixing it. But it looks good in the bar so buy a bottle pour it our and put something good in that little pouch.

So damned smooth you think you're drinking air. It's a great whisky for anyone who doesn't think drinking whisky straight up is concievably drinkable. Great value and a good summer whisky; I just don't ever see it becoming my whisky of choice. So smooth it's boring!.

Agree the "wow factor" is minimal, but that's just fine in my book. There is lots of flavor to enjoy and sometimes you just don't want a lot of complexity or bite.

I agree with the "Bottle Notes." The price isn't bad and the quality is above average, but no "wow" factor.
