Proof66 Notes

The Dalmore 18yr scotch is one of the most consistently decorated scotches in the world (according to our database) and represents the premium 18 year aging. It spends the first 14 years in American Oak ex-bourbon casks and then given an additional 4 year of aging in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks (themselves, at least 30 years old). They call it a "provocative and intense taste."

The Dalmore 18yr got a huge score from the Beverage Testing Institute in 2010 calling it "powerful and regal."

We personally had the opportunity to try the Dalmore 18-Year in Chicago during the 2011 Tasting Panel Magazine tour. We said: "It has a very sophisticated aroma but drinking it is a pure pleasure. It has a dusty, earthy taste that is masculine and intense and demands a cigar and an outdoor setting."

The distillery itself was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson. It lies near the Averon River, which is also the water it uses for its scotch. It was later sold to the Mackenzie family in 1886, which gives rise to the luceo non uro motto from the family translating as "I shine, not burn." The distillery is currently owned by Whyte & Mackay. The Dalmore Distillery has the emblem of the stag--an antlered head--which comes from a legend from 1263 when the ancestors of the founders saved King Alexander III from being gored by a stag during a hunt; he rewarded them by allowing them to use the stag head on their coat of arms. The Dalmore brand was originally owned by Whyte & Mackay (and in turn Diageo) but was sold to Emperador Distillers of the Philippines in 2014.

4.5/5, it's a classy balanced all wine influenced scotch. Where it separates itself from the pack is on the smoothness, balance, and richness of the wine. Far less wood influence than macallan's 18, smoother and higher quality wine than bush mills 16 (a good wine whiskey I might add), and like a richer version of the 12. Pitfalls are on the finish and one dimensionality. If you like wine influence it's a must try even at the price

Too smoky? Not a chance. True, there are wood tones but they are not overpowering at all. There is a lot going with regards to taste and its all good. If you have the money to buy, I highly recommend.

Too smokey. I prefer a smoother Irish whiskey such as Jameson.
