Proof66 Notes

The Dalmore 1974 vintage is part of the "Rare & Prestigious" series of editions from Whyte and Mackay. It is said to be 32 years old and limited to a release of 780 bottles. It is aged in a variety of sherry casks as well as American oak. They describe the final 5 years in Matusalem sherry as a "self improvement regime."

The 2011 Beverage Testing Institute review awarded it a 99 point rating--only the second time in history we''re aware of that any spirit has received such a high score--and commented "Seems to go on forever; an amazingly rich and vibrant yet contemplative whisky." Remarkably, they followed it right up in 2012 with a second-running 99 point rating saying it has a "deep, feminine soul."

The distillery itself was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson. It lies near the Averon River, which is also the water it uses for its scotch. It was later sold to the Mackenzie family in 1886, which gives rise to the luceo non uro motto from the family translating as "I shine, not burn." The distillery is currently owned by Whyte & Mackay. The Dalmore Distillery has the emblem of the stag--an antlered head--which comes from a legend from 1263 when the ancestors of the founders saved King Alexander III from being gored by a stag during a hunt; he rewarded them by allowing them to use the stag head on their coat of arms. The Dalmore brand was originally owned by Whyte & Mackay (and in turn Diageo) but was sold to Emperador Distillers of the Philippines in 2014.
